Highly entertaining, fashionably versatile and always amusing, R.Kelly Clipperton and his band Kelly and the Kellygirls unleashed the the black and blue bawdy burlesque of their sophomore album We love you, but not as Much as we love Ourselves in May 2006, a follow-up to 2004’s ‘swing swing’. The band completed a 27 date Canadian tour in the fall of 2006, followed by a Western Tour and UK Tour in the summer of 2007 with amazing reviews and audiences across the board.
Clipperton - though no stranger to the cycle of smug self-absorption - takes care (unlike so many) to look beyond the mirror. We Love You, But Not As Much As We Love Ourselves is a manic, theatrically charged paean to the crash and burn of desire in all its messy glory. In a modern twist of mischievous revelry, Clipperton, whose voice fiendishly croaks somewhere between Peter Murphy and Tim Curry, at times channels Ian Dury in sheer sweat-soaked bluster if not precise sonic gusto: the band create both a joyous and painful rumble, its subversive, ska-tinged swinging showstoppers soaring sky-high one second, only to wallow in the gutter with bitter bravado the next.
