About Me

As jazz continues to reinvent itself, successful incarnations are taking shape as hybrids between the wild adventure of improvisation and the sophisticated directness of today's pop music - a natural cycle that has produced what some call the Nu-Jazz movement. Enter trumpeter/singer-songwriter Matt Shulman, a staple of the NYC underground jazz scene with a penchant for catchy melodies and an emotional connection with his audience: Matt has been described as "...an amalgamation of Miles Davis and Radiohead...a modern day Chet Baker with a far seeing vision..." (All About Jazz), and "A top drawer trumpeter who also sings like an angel obscured by a storm cloud..." (JazzTimes). With 'FEEL THE SUN' (Jaggo/Universal), the follow-up to his innovative and critically acclaimed debut 'So It Goes', listeners are moved by the crystallization of Matt's fresh approach - a new blend of heartfelt songwriting and genuine musicianship that has industry insiders excited about a potential breakthrough in 2008. //Born into a musical family in a small town in Vermont, Matt started on violin and piano at ages 3 and 4, then moved to the baritone horn, eventually finding his way to jazz and his gift as a trumpeter. Matt received numerous prizes and awards for his music early on, including winning 1st place in the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition, winning 1st place in the National Jazz Trumpet Competition, being named a finalist in the Thelonius Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition, and winning the Yamaha Young Performing Artist Award, as well as having earned a Bachelor's of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Master's of Music from New York University, which he attended on fellowship through the Alberto Vilar Global Fellowship in the Performing Arts. After moving to New York City Matt made his Carnegie Hall main stage debut as featured guest soloist with the New York Pops Orchestra in 2002, and was named Jazz Artist of the Year by the 2003 Independent Music Awards, earning him international acclaim for his highly expressive sound and pioneering approaches. In addition to his rich trumpet tone and honest vocal delivery, one thing many audiences notice about Matt is his mastery of multiphonics - what All About Jazz calls "an other-worldly sound...Matt Shulman is something of a tour de force he sings, plays, and uses his voice as a muted horn in a solo and duet with the trumpet..." Matt's spirit of innovation can also be found in his development of the ShulmanSystem, a device he patented for promoting a more efficient and musical approach to the trumpet. //Possessing a rare combination of traditional and progressive aesthetics, Matt has toured internationally, recorded and/or collaborated with such diverse artists as Brad Mehldau, Lenny Pickett, The Jazz Mandolin Project, Robert Sadin, John Medeski from MMW, Kenny Werner, the Complexions Dance Company, Skitch Henderson, and Nneena Freelon. His work as a performer has been featured on NBC's Saturday Night Live, the nationally syndicated presidential race coverage on MSNBC, and as both soloist and composer at Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Classically trained by Mark Gould of the Juilliard School, Matt has given New York and world premiers of Edward Green's 'Concerto in C', Marcello Toledo's 'Solitude of the World', Timothy Newman's 'Intervening Rift', and his own 'Works for Trumpet'. //..

Sounds Like: "a modern day Chet Baker with a far-seeing vision...an amalgamation of Miles Davis and Radiohead...The Next Big Thing." -All About Jazz"...'So It Goes' is a brave, bracing blast of innovation and spirit that reminds us that experimentation and entertainment can, in the right hands, be natural allies...reaches for something illuminated and elusive...someday when I’m blue and feeling spiritually confined, I’ll count on it to blast me out of my doldrums...a great album." -Rokovoko"...a postmillennial Chet Baker...on So It Goes, Matt Shulman further polishes atrumpet and vocals package." - The New York Times"...to quote the dead-on laconic judgment of Miles Davis - “the cat can play.” ...better, in fact, than Chet Baker ever could... Shulman is that rare trumpet player to play multiphonically (i.e. play more than one tone at the same time)... he’s as happy to use electronics as Radiohead and to add wordless vocalises to his music a la Pat Metheny....and he has serious good old-fashioned chops, too – more than enough to scare current critical darling Dave Douglas off the stand (if he wanted to)... new in the direction of jazz...something that hasn’t been heard repeatedly for the past three decades." - The Buffalo News"...trumpeter and loop enthusiast Shulman rocking...really does live up to its Chet Baker-meets-Radiohead comparative hype..." -IRT Magazine"Young, intense and innovative...trumpeter, vocalist and composer Matt Shulman makes multidimensional and striking music...Combining vocal influences from jazz and rock...suggests Radiohead's Thom Yorke bred with Chet Baker... Shulman's fresh approach is a welcome addition to the jazz melting pot." - New Jersey Star Ledger"JAZZED OUT: Trumpeter Matt Shulman comes off like a modern-day Chet Baker or Rahsaan Roland Kirk on "So It Goes" (Jaggo, A-). The edge sharpening comes with his use of loops and split-mouth virtuosity to simultaneously blow and sing in a phat, progressive style." -The Philadelphia Daily News"...equally adept at lovely, lyrical horn lines...he quickly moves off the map used by most of his contemporaries, bound for unexplored territory...his wild inventiveness adds intrigue and excitement to music that refuses to put safety first." - Beyond Playlist
