Please, do not support the circus! "The circus environment is now, and will remain, grossly inimical to the health and welfare of wild animals, whether used for performance and/or exhibition. As a veterinarian, I am of the opinion that such use of animals is cruel and should be prevented."—John Auty, MVSc Former Assistant Director of the Bureau of Animal Health Department of Primary Industries, CanberraPlease visit: http://www.animalsaustralia.org/issues/circuses.phpWild animals used in circuses are routinely subjected to months on the road confined in small, barren cages. These animals often live in filthy and dilapidated enclosures or are chained in one position for the majority of the day with no chance to move, let alone express their full range of natural behaviours or to socialize with other members of their species.Eliminating animal exploitation in circuses simply means the increased use of human performers, not an end to the tradition of circuses. What You Can Do:* Don't visit animal circuses (unless you are protesting against them). * Contact your local council to find out if it allows animal circuses on its land. If it does, write a letter asking them to ban animal circuses in your area. * Write a letter to the editor of your local paper, or speak on talk-back radio about the cruelties involved in animal circuses and why they should be banned. If there is a circus coming to town...1. Tell all your friends and family why you don’t agree with animal circuses, and get as many people aware of the issues as possible—ask them for their support with a circus protest. 2. Try and obtain some give-away tickets (allowing you to attend the first performance), so you can tell the press about what you’ve seen, and also so the circus can’t say you don’t know what you’re talking about. 3. Write a press release with your protest date, place and time (remember to start the protest well before the performance time), and send out to all local press, TV and radio. 4. Spread the word about your protest on relevant blogs and websites, as well as printing flyers to put in your local shops and on message boards, and ask all of your friends and family to attend. 5. Make placards and banners to attract attention, and try to hire animal costumes! 6. Contact the local police to let them know of your protest (which helps diffuse potential problems). 7. On the day of the protest, contact the press by phone, and make sure photographers have been booked and that a journalist will be present. Also take a camera with you so you have a record of the protest, and can put the photos online!
