THE WINDSOR STAR "THE SCENE" CD BREAKDOWN - Monday June 18, 2007
The Dead's Elite - Self-titled
There was a time when this Windsor metalcore quintet's music would've been utterly typical in the city's all-ages underground. I can't count how many local shows I went to that featured bands playing stuff just like this seven or eight years ago. Has it been that long? Damn. Gotta give these guys credit for not succombing to whatever's hip. All the stylistic hallmarks are on this debut EP: throaty roaring vocals, metal licks, galloping riffs, chugging breakdowns and the occasional circle-pit rhythms. The Dead's Elite have quite a bit more shredding ability than their peers - check out the cool fret-tapping that starts the song '33 Pounds of Pressure'. Maybe it's my personal nostalgia, but I'm into it. - Dalson Chen
