Where Broadway Shines On

About Me

It is a long-time practice in the theatre that a ghost light – a floor lamp holding a single bare light bulb – be lit on stage after everyone has left for the night, so that the theatre never goes dark. In the spirit of preserving the music of the theatre by composers old and new, Ghostlight Records, created by Sh-K-Boom co-founder Kurt Deutsch, will make sure that the music will never be silent. Ghostlight Records will honor the past while shining a light toward the future. “I realized the need for a separate imprint from Sh-K-Boom to record and preserve musicals, both classics and new work, and the performances of vocalists who wouldn't be recorded elsewhere” said Kurt Deutsch. “Sh-K-Boom will stay focused on recording and encouraging more diverse musicals and supporting theatre artists that don't necessarily fit into the confines of traditional musical theatre. There will always be a crossover of audiences interested in both, but each will have its own identity.”
Most recently, Ghostlight released the cast albums for two groundbreaking and critically-lauded new musicals: In the Heights, which won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical and debuted at 1 on the Billboard Soundtracks chart, and Passing Strange, which had the first-ever exclusive iTunes release for a cast album and was dubbed “the CD-download of the year,” by Edge Magazine. The label was honored with three 2006 Grammy Award nominations for Best Musical Show Album: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Hair (The Actors’ Fund Of America Benefit Recording) and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and a 2007 Grammy Award nomination for The Drowsy Chaperone. In addition, Ghostlight’s Broadway catalogue features the popular cast albums of Legally Blonde, [title of show], Little Women, LoveMusik, Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me and High Fidelity.
Other new releases from Ghostlight include the debut solo album of Tony nominee Kelli O’Hara, “Wonder in the World,” the world premiere recording of the William Finn revue, “Make Me a Song,” “Sunday in New York,” the second album from Tony winner Christine Ebersole and Billy Stritch, Klea Blackhurst and Billy Stritch’s “Dreaming of a Song: The Music of Hoagy Carmichael,” Dirty Rotten Scoundrels composer David Yazbek’s solo album “Evil Monkey Man,” and “True Love,” a special charity album in honor of the late actor Daniel McDonald. The catalogue also includes Michael John LaChiusa’s new musicals See What I Wanna See and Bernarda Alba, Patti LuPone’s solo album “The Lady with the Torch,” Songs From An Unmade Bed, new recordings of The Fantasticks and Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Ricky Ian Gordon’s Orpheus & Euridice and The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin, the City Center Encores! Premiere Recording of the Hammerstein Romberg Operetta The New Moon, The Irish Rep’s Cast Recording of Finian’s Rainbow, and Christine Ebersole and Billy Stritch’s “In Your Dreams.” Upcoming releases include Little Fish, Lea DeLaria’s “The Live Smoke Sessions,” and the debut album, “Wish,” from Tony winner Sutton Foster.
