It is a long-time practice in the theatre that a ghost light – a floor lamp holding a single bare light bulb – be lit on stage after everyone has left for the night, so that the theatre never goes dark. In the spirit of preserving the music of the theatre by composers old and new, Ghostlight Records, created by Sh-K-Boom co-founder Kurt Deutsch, will make sure that the music will never be silent. Ghostlight Records will honor the past while shining a light toward the future. “I realized the need for a separate imprint from Sh-K-Boom to record and preserve musicals, both classics and new work, and the performances of vocalists who wouldn't be recorded elsewhere†said Kurt Deutsch. “Sh-K-Boom will stay focused on recording and encouraging more diverse musicals and supporting theatre artists that don't necessarily fit into the confines of traditional musical theatre. There will always be a crossover of audiences interested in both, but each will have its own identity.â€
Most recently, Ghostlight released the cast albums for two groundbreaking and critically-lauded new musicals: In the Heights, which won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical and debuted at 1 on the Billboard Soundtracks chart, and Passing Strange, which had the first-ever exclusive iTunes release for a cast album and was dubbed “the CD-download of the year,†by Edge Magazine.
