(I'm a bit of an octopus, it keeps me fresh ;)
I VJ either alone or with a partner. I have been working closely with Leeane Berger VJing over the last year, and I will be mentoring Meagan Wohlberg and Erin Gee in the next little while as well. I've also taught workshops in VJing at galleries, artist-run centres, festivals, and a high school. If you want to find out more about my VJ practice, click here .
I am also an experimental turntablist and sound artist. I cut up, break, melt, glue, sandpaper, paint, and glue records to tease new sounds from vinyl and use these "sculptural" records in my live turntable-based performances. Sometimes I make my own record needles or play the turntable itself with various contact mic tools I've created over the years. It's a very cool thing to experience as an audience member, I hear! I have done experimental turntablism performances and/or recordings with Esther B., Marinko Jareb, tobias c. van Veen, Jon Vaughn, and Tim Olive. I VJed for Mike Hansen's experimental turntablism performance at Artspace recently, which was really interesting! When Esther, Marinko, and I perform together, we perform under the name "Vinyl Interventions Trio". I've also done some field recording and contact mic concerts and workshops. I also work with other sound artists on vinyl-based and electroacoustic or noise art.
I usually DJ noise/breakcore/8bit/IDM/psychedelic/abstract hip-hop glitchy stuff alone under my own name, and I've been known to sing, beatbox, and play homemade instruments along with my DJing performances. My DJing performances are always different and pretty wild...I'm probably most well known in the Prairie electronic music scene for my Saturday night solo noise/"freakbeat oddio" sets at the CONNECT festival (which I'm helping organize this year!). I started DJing experimental music and downtempo in 1995 at electronic music events and on the local community radio station under the name 'Lady Gates'. However, I have recently discovered a new DJ persona inside of me called "DJ Rug Doctor"...she spins nasty miami bass, breakcore, and early 90s dance music, and she doesn't answer to Carrie...she's kind of a ho, but don't be fooled by her wigs, fun fur coats, gold chains, and bling, she's still from da block.
I am in two really exciting projects with my partner, Jon Vaughn: Green Gift (noise/electroacoustic/folk) and J + C Feedback Factory (no-input audio and video mixers). I'm very passionate about both of these projects, and we've got lots of videos on my YouTube page of our performances together.
I also work with other artists from time to time.
the big list of people I've worked with:
Jon Vaughn, Nuthre, Mike Hansen, Knurl, zoomboy, Tim Olive, Leeane Berger, Meagan Wohlberg, Laura Kavanaugh, Ian Birse, Holzkopf, Scant Intone, tobias c. van Veen, Fire Flower Revue, Evening Hymns, Max Haiven, Will Kaufold, Tim Jancke, FRILLO (Y2K-era: me + Jon Vaughn, Dylan McKinnon, Christine Eggertson, Morgan Sorochuck), an anonymous group of Brownies, Ruairi Lazers, Ryan Hill, Chad Munson, Antoinette Dykesman, Amanda Schurman, Vera Ronkos, the Blue Girl, and Moka Only.
mp3s of my music:
Here is a two-hour radio documentary that I did ifor the send + receive festival in 2005. It's called "Unlocking the Groove: The Synaesthetics of Experimental Turntablism and Vinyl Sculpture":
- Unlocking the Groove - Part 1
- Unlocking the Groove - Part 2
- Unlocking the Groove - Part 3
- Unlocking the Groove - Part 4
I also have a release out on the net.label Panospria . It's from a live set I did at the end of 2005 with Scant Intone (aka Constantine Katsiris) and Jon Vaughn at an event at paved Art + New Media called TEXTURES.SK. I played Fisher-Price turntable with a homemade needle, contact mics, and small objects. Jon played several acoustic instruments and laptop, and Scant Intone played from his laptop as well. It is their 20th release! It's free, enjoy!
- Carrie Gates, Jon Vaughn and Scant Intone - Live at PAVED Arts
There's also my release on BricoLodge with the Vinyl Interventions Trio while you're at it. It's a super fun recording of myself, Esther Bourdages, and Marinko Jareb on 6 turntables, with homemade record needles, prepared vinyl, and an appetite for destruction!
- The Vinyl Interventions Trio - Live at Ecube, Montréal
Also on BricoLodge is a recording I did with Tim Olive and Jon Vaughn that has a very onkyo-esque-ness about it....I was using a sampling keyboard, blank records, and a contact mic, while both Tim and Jon used prepared guitars, and Jon also used his no-input mixer. It's quite lovely, perhaps.
- Tim Olive, Jon Vaughn, and Carrie Gates - Floors and Frames
Here's a link to a DJ mix of experimental and ambient music I did as part of phoniq's 'beta_lab' events at the Esperenza, Montreal:

The Techné of the VJ: Video Mixing for the Curious
*above is a video of a talk I gave on Sept. 9, 2006 at paved Art + New Media at their dorkbot meeting. The video above shows maybe a tenth of what happened during the talk, which was a combination of technical and theoretical information about analogue VJing using video mixers, DVD, VHS tapes, live video camera feeds, and computer output. I love VJing, and I want to infect others with my passion! The video can be downloaded here .
