About Me

  • we are two
  • jayrope (music) and slow learner (vocals and poetry).

  • We started with hardly a plan, even the name only came about after a dozen or so songs finished. Slow learner happened to live near Jayrope's old loft recording space and strolled by one afternoon with a bunch of lyrics, that he then described as urgent.
  • Urgency went out the window first and the two just let it roll. Two months later we looked up from the mixing desk and lyric sheet and realised we had something going for themselves. Within a mere eight weeks we had found a style completely of our own, though wide open to all kinds of influences ranging from jayrope's past with digital hardcore to the then emerging scene of weirdo folk around the planet, as well as a shared liking for the less corny aspects of 90s trip hop that would manifest itself in their choice of loops and beats as well as Slow Learner's unique mix of spoken word and singing.
  • We immediately took our act to concert stages all over Germany and Switzerland and played everywhere from living rooms, art galleries, tiny cinemas to generic concert venues and rave clubs.
  • We shared bills with a variety of bands and acts such as Tarwater, Hood, Anne Laplantine, Vinita Joshi , Vanishing Breed, Matt Elliott , Manyfingers , John Callaghan and Like Plankton For The Elephant, to name but a few.
  • For the first quarter of 2006 we will stay off the live circuit to start working on our next album - provisionally titled "for the living / from the dead". The new songs will feature various guests, among them local Berlin luminaries such as the Human Elephant, Kiki Bohemia, Suska Lovestar and Kraftpost. With the songwriting well under way as you're reading this the recording is scheduled for spring and will take place at Manyfingers' studio in Bristol, hopefully followed by a short UK tour in april.
  • Jayrope does solo worx , aswell as plays with the desertronic duo Hardman and the mass improv kraut funk anti collective Girls United . His other activities include all sorts of graphic and web design, production work for other artists and raising his daughter.
  • Slow Learner is a well regarded DJ in Berlin bars and clubs, and runs the Goldmund booking agency together with a partner. Other activities include translation work, meeting people and getting his heart broken on a regular base.

  • It depends on time of day (or night) and circumstances. but mainly by past, present and future folk. from the wickerman soundtrack to current hybrids of experiment and tradition like Rusty Santos , Matt Elliott and knowledge of bugs. as well as loads of nicotine and caffeine during times of heightened creativity.
  • The lyrical contents is inspired by various sources: american modernist poetry from Hart Crane to Elizabeth Bishop , fictional travelogues, relocation of original source material ranging from tv to conversation snippets, a general unease with the human condition and an old fashioned idea of melancholic sentimentality.
  • We listen to future popmusic on the Estonian Kohvi Radio online aswell as we feature ourselves among other kliklak.net artists on jayrope's webcast
