About Me

Pipher is not a band, but is Lee. Pipher is what you hear. Pipher is maybe Lee, maybe not. What is Pipher? Pipher is not a band, but is Lee. Lee is what you hear? No Pipher is what you hear (pay attention!). Geez. What else is there to tell? This is a music project by a writer named Lee going by Pipher. Why Pipher? Late-night random. Murky Town is Monkeytown is known to those who know it.

[Review by Eduardo Padilla] I am the son of a psychiatrist. For a person like me, this offers many advantages. I take fieldtrips to the madhouse, and walk alongside the doctors, through rat-maze corridors and out into multiple courtyards. I watch the insane doing their thing there… they stare back at me, some of them leering with a knowing look in their eyes, transmitting a terrible suggestion of hidden complicity. Sometimes, the staff lets me browse through files of drawings and letters (ethically murky? Oh go get stuffed)… some of the letters almost lead me to conclude that the most well read people in town are locked inside this sanatorium. At the end of the day, I get to leave and go home… some inmates may mock me with “you’re like me” and “you’ll be back” looks, but in the end, I’m legally sane and they are not…. whatever that means. Now, you might mistake Pipher’s art as the work of a madman… but only if you forget the simple fact that madmen cannot articulate their madness, famous exceptions such as Nietszche and Artaud notwithstanding. No, Lee Thompson is not a lunatic ladies and gentlemen, he’s just an exceptionally smart and sensitive individual, owner of a playful, sardonic and far reaching vision. His universe is dark and stark and often abysmal, but his wealth of black humor will keep you warm (even if the electrodes jolting you stink up the room with the scent of charred flesh). A remarkable aspect to keep in mind is the fact that this character is not connected to current or past trends of experimental music and/or noise, or at least he wasn’t when he composed this album. His inventiveness sprouts from lonelier places than the specialized record stores in Chicago and New York… think of him as the Grandma Moses of unclassifiable, experimental noise-music if you will. Yes, Pipher is just some bearded guy, living in a creaky, haunted old house in the bad part of town, snowed in for the winter… inventing terrible nightmares to pass the time. In effect, his madness has kept him from going insane.
