Howdy fucking doo, good people. Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and new year and enjoyed our warm winter weather while it lasted. Last night I saw first hand that snow is a bar's worst enemy, and it's only half an inch.
Here on the MySpace site, I'm using my blog in addition to my frontpage to give you articles, directories, and a forum for the local scene in Providence. If you would like to get articles and new information as it comes out, then subscribe to The Hand Job Revival Project Blog .
So much has happened this past month. Jerky's finally got their entertainment license, so I've been quite busy helping them out and producing flyers at least once or twice a day, and I haven't gotten out to as many shows lately. But I have been running wild around the art community and getting ready to improve my art and artists section. Finally, right? And the jackassery and douchebaggery continues on the bar circuit, as I find more and more places to shock and annoy.
I'm still planning on the 7th for the return of the site. Woohoo! And, there will be a couple of new sites as well, including the all new The PVD Family... which is a charitable organization that will be launching a series of fundraising events for various causes, including local hunger, healthcare, and political issues. Yeah, we're going to throw down the gauntlet this year. I'll have more about that up soon.
Some of you may have noticed too, that the songs of the week have been more like songs of the bi-week or even the month. So let's call a spade a spade and say that until shit calms down or I get a boy-slave to do my bidding without fucking up, the Song of the Week will now be the Song of the Bi-Weekly Or Monthyly Variety. Just for now. Eventually I'll have enough time again. Just not right now.
In the next week or so though, HAVE FUN and check out the massive amounts of shows happening. I've posted the calendar back up down below and even though it doesn't look like it yet, it will contain regional shows, not just local shit. We will be making a scene, one hand job at a time.
Van Hand Job
DRUNK ROBB AND THE SHOTS
Rhode Island: Punk/Rock/Garage
The first time I saw them play, I thought, "These guys are going to shock the hell out of everyone." Sure as shit, I just saw them play on the 19th at AS220, probably my fourth time out to see them, and it was the best I'd heard of them yet. Their sound is really starting to pull together. The best part was hearing people who were just seeing them for the first time say, "This band fucking rocks!" That sort of thing always gets me all emotional. I like being right.
Drunk Robb is just what he sounds like, a drunk guy named Robb who leads out vocals and the guitar. He's backed up by Sean Patrick on the guitar, Chris on drums, and Benny on the bass guitar. You may recognize Robb from his days with Murphy's Law, and Chris might also look familiar from Almost Blind.
The first time I saw them play was way back last May or June when they opened up for The Business. (On a side note, I kept wondering why Mickey had been looking at me funny when I was up at the front of the stage, and then pictures of the night remind me that I was dressed like a pirate for absolutely NO reason.) I took some photos for the band, some of which I still have to send to them (sorry Robb!) and some of which didn't come out so good because my flash stopped working. Of course, I couldn't stay so close to the stage for long, because it happened: a circle pit formed in front of the band and I had to get the hell out of there before my camera lost more than its flash. Most importantly, I knew that it was rare for a new opening act to inspire so much energy in the crowd. If you've ever gotten to the Living Room early before, you've probably noticed that with the exception of one or two wild people, the crowd usually stands around drooling on themselves until the main act gets on stage.
They've been recording and have some awesome stuff up on their MySpace site. They will also be featured on a compilation CD coming out in the very near future called Rhode Island's Rejects. So go check them out at myspace.com/drunkrobbandtheshots .
TALK OF THE TOWN
Downtown Providence
On Washington Street, nestled in next to a Cuban eatery, is a little Irish bar called Talk of the Town. The Colonel, former lead guitarist of Rhode Island legends the Amazing Royal Crowns and recently disbanded Cobra-Matics, flexes his amazing CD collection and gets the bar hopping on Sunday nights. The urge to dance is so great, in fact, that the pool table is moved to accommodate the crazy dancing crowd.
The bar itself hosts quite a number of unusual concoctions, including rum-soaked cherries (which go for a buck a cup), lime-green Jello shots, and whatever else your heart may fancy. GET DIRECTIONS
BLACK BETTY ROCKS
Rock 'N Roll Pinup Sets a Standard
It's apparent that even if someone told 23-year-old Jenny Langer that it's tough getting by as a woman, she didn't even hear it. Langer, who is more widely known as Black Betty, is a Boston girl intent on re-defining what is is to be a sexy pinup and musician, as well as what it means to be a young woman.
Her band, Black Betty and the Bad Habits have not only won a local rockhunt, but have come out steps ahead with a beautifully mixed and mastered demo, cell phone rings tones, and are currently preparing to shoot a music video. READ MORE
CHOPPAHEAD
Chopper Animals and Mayhem Machines: VoL.2
Last summer, Club Hell filled with some of the meanest, greasiest, and loudest mother fuckers I have ever met. They were all there for the release of the "Chopper Animals and Mayhem Machines: VoL.1" DVD. The movie was amazing. Now, you may notice that they chose to specify that it was just the first installment. The first DVD can be purchased via the Choppahead official website at www.choppahead.com . Or add them on their brand new MySpace page at myspace.com/CHOPPAHEADKUSTOMS . And, as promised, the second is due out next year. The rowdy boys from Choppahead Kustom Choppers have put out special teaser on YouTube. WATCH IT
