About Me

Pretty sad day in the world of music -- Hughie Thomasson, lead guitarist of the Outlaws, a band I've followed since their teen center days in the 1960's passed away on September 9th at this home in Brooksville FL. The "Guitar Army" is no more. I hope you'll all take a moment or two to remember Hughie while listening to "Green Grass and High Tides"...
Now back to what's usually up here
Just an old rock and roller...used to work in concert promotions and photography in the 1970s and '80s. I was trying to get back into things with "eXposure", a service offering bands both PR and live performance photography and electronic press kits but haven't really pushed at it too hard. I'm old school film photography...you know, without the pixels, and a lot of black and white. I do also have a digital camera but it's not particularly high buck and for now, I'm sticking with what I know. Apparently what I know has limited appeal LOL
I also produce DVD slideshows for events such as band reunions, family and class reunions, pretty much anything you'd like a hip slideshow for
I am slowly moving my slideshows of band photos to the photo area of my site. Some of these were taken with the el-cheapo digital and converted to black and whites, others shot with my trusty Canon T70's or even older T50. Please leave comments on the photos so I know if what I'm doing even appeals to anyone, but since I'm a lousy musician, I'm living vicariously through my viewfinder.
About 2 years ago I got a Washburn Pro Strat-copy and a Washburn D100 acoustic and re-kindled my interest in playing guitar. I've been plugging away at it but I'm still not too impressive, possibly because I only get to practice in spurts. I tried playing with guitar picks I got from people who have real talent hoping some would rub off but no luck...my apologies to Chris Anderson, Hughie Thomasson, Henry Paul, Steve Earle and Lee Simpson--your talents are yours and non-transferable it appears, but hey, it was worth a shot! I have learned why the call 'em bar(re) chords--I've been sober for 13 years and those babies drive me to want a drink. God bless long time friend, Dennis Lawson, who tells me I'm improving even when I have to think he's just "being nice" (GRIN). Big thanks to Den for going onstage with me August 3 at the Studio Cafe in Orlando--my first time playing in front of an actual audience. We've played a few other times there as well.
Two weeks ago I quit smoking -- the guitars were supposed to help me stop smoking but it took me two years to work my way around to it. I'm still struggling every day with the urge to light one up but I'm hanging in there, largely due to the aforementioned friends Dennis & Lee, who have both been extremely tolerant of my cranky moods and have given me numerous pep-talks and "you can do its" ...you guys are awesome!!!
In salute to all my musician buddies, I offer the following advise all non-musical fellows to heed the following advise wisely!
I've also been a genealogist for over 15 years so if you're also into family history and have hit a brick wall, my research rates are pretty reasonable and I could use the money to support my other habits!

My Interests

Florida 60's rock and roll (writing a book about teen center bands from FL in the 60's and early 70's), playing guitar, genealogy, photography (put down the digitals folks, go back to 35mm), politics (stay OUT of the Bushes) ....stock car racing (a holdover from my youth)...

I'd like to meet:

Steve Earle, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and a psychic who could spiritually guide me to the winning lottery numbers.
Also, I'd like to meet a few guitar folks in Orlando or Tampa FL (and the Galax VA area once I get back there) who have similar taste in music and wouldn't mind having an old hippie sit in with them to learn some material.

Music:

Steve Earle, Neil Young, The Outlaws, Blackhawk, John Prine, The Bottle Rockets, Drive By Truckers, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Brutha Niel, Rick Birkbeck and Friends, Joe Bonamassa, Buffalo Springfield, Black Finger, John Mellencamp, Robert Randolph, and anything Clapton ever played on...Actually I listen to a cast of thousands of diametrically opposed and culturally diverse individuals with one common denominator--they all play real music-no synthetic corporately choreographed schmaltz!
I'm currently working on a slideshow of photos I took at the September 16th, 2006 Orlando Rock Reunion show. If you were there, you saw the one I did of the old band photos--that one's still available if you didn't pick yours up there. If you'd like to order the old show, or preorder the new one, please contact me for details.

Movies:

...only the ones that make it to television and not too many of them....why spend money on a movie when you can spend it on live music! Unless of course you compromise and go see Neil Young's "Heart of Gold"...there are a couple of old ones though -- Gone With The Wind, Wag the Dog and Harold and Maude....revisit H&M--it seems to still work....

Television:

An occasional music show if one can be found which actually has MUSIC...Network stinkssssssssssssss...I did enjoy watching "The Closer" though....I just gotta love a southern gal who makes everyone around her look stoopid.....Saving Grace is pretty good and I'm kind of a "Law and Order" addict.

Books:

lately mostly guitar stuff...

Heroes:

God, any of my 60's buds who are still alive to tell the tale and can still construct a sentence to do so, Steve Earle and Neil Young for having convictions and sticking to them, John Gellman (still one of the best rock and roll photographers on the planet)...the "Outlaws Angels" (Hughie Thomasson, Billy Jones, Frank O'Keefe and James Britton - RIP guys), the late Dave Fiester, my friends Lee and Cathy who have battled back from major health issues and who have also put up with a tremendous amount of MY crap while I've battled back from my own problems, the folks who are brave enough to try and teach me to play guitar, shoot...Heroes...I gotta think on that...

I Got Blisters on my Fingers...

Back in my high school daze, we somehow managed to convince the powers that was at Boone High and the Orange Co School Board to delve into an experimental music class---GUITAR.  Don't know how we...

Input wanted from Orlando area bands

I spend a lot of time in Orlando (where I was raised) and have begun to wonder about why clubs there book 3-5 bands in one night.  Seems the folks in the crowd spend more time watching set up and...
