Tudo bem? Tudo jóia! Tá bom!

About Me

I am now 40 years young. I love to swim! I could hang out in water all day long practically...I have been known to be the only person swimming at a crowded Maine beach (the ocean water along the coast of Maine is usually in the low 40s). I am currently attending the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque; majoring in Spanish, and begining my minor in Portuguese this coming semester (Fall 2006). I love animals. My husband Kiff and I currently live with 2 Cats named Girlfriend and Tabithaflop, 2 Kittens named Lilly and Charlie, and 4 rats named Portabella, Moonshine, Yersinia the Second of Kathryn or Y2K, and Jadis the Ice Queen of Narnia. I moved to New Mexico with Kiff one year ago from Burlington, Vermont. Burlington is kind of my hometown, as it Cusco, Peru, even though I haven't lived there for over 20 years. I like to bicycle in safe places, meaning that riding on busy streets frightens me. I sing, play guitar, love to bang on hand drums of all sizes and shapes, and enjoy a good percussion session. Photography is one of my passions, and now with our new SLR Digital Rebel camera (new, meaning that it is not 40 years old) I take pictures of just about anything. I like to spend time with family, especially having sleep-overs with my two nieces. I'm a computerholic and, if I'm home, will check my email many times per day. I enjoy playing .. backgammon while I'm talking on the phone. I have the most basic cell phone I could find from Virgin Atlantic (under $30!). I am queen of procrastination! I am addicted to procrastinating, I think... some might call me lazy! My dream is to translate text from English to Spanish and vice versa... I am fluent in Spanish but am learning a lot more in school. My Spanish just keeps getting better and better. I love to travel, but hardly ever do because I never seem to have enough money to pay off the credit cards, let alone to travel! I like getting know people, and have very much enjoyed that aspect of being back in school. Another aspect of school that I enjoy is the lack of dress code. I love hats, and I was very happy to be able to wear hats on a daily basis after moving here from Vermont. My employer in Vermont did not allow hats, so, to avoid hathead I simply stopped wearing hats. Alas, I must go do something I promised Kiff I would do and stop procrastinating... I have a sink full of mostly small tupperware-like containers from cleaning out the fridge the other day that will start smelling up the house if they are not washed. Toodle-oo!And here are my ratties!

Beware: This may make you weep! It sure made me weep the first time I saw it! I love cats, and, obviously cats love us... love seems to rule in the mammal kingdom. I just read an article... 2 friends in London bought him from the zoo... and sent him to Africa after a year... he was too big... he'd hadn't been see for 9 mos. at this point.

Octopus escaping through a 1 inch hole

Octopuses have an amazing ability to squeeze through tiny crevices, cracks and holes. My fall BIOS independent studies student, Raymond Deckel is investigating just how small a hole Octopus macropus can fit through as well as how long it takes them to squeeze through different sizes of holes. CAABS intern Rowena Day, NSF-REU intern Jared Kibele as well as teaching assistant Abel Valdivia help wrangle the 232 g octopus, Ray times it€™s escape through a 1 inch hole while I shot video clips for later analysis.
