The Blood Red Mountain Band

NEW EP OUT NOW!

About Me

An 8-piece band playing an infectious home-brew of pop americana. Think Bob Dylan on holiday in Ireland with Arcade Fire...

METRO GIG PREVIEW

Thurs March 13th 2008
The Hub, in aid of Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign
“The band’s bluegrass vibes sit as comfortably alongside The Waltons as Jack White and Arcade Fire, so expect a good old-but-new do-si-do without having to don any gingham or sit atop prickly bales of hay. Accordians, mandolins, xylophones, melodicas, harmonicas, moonshine, a barn dance without the barn and a good cause to boot - what more could you ask for?"

EVENING HERALD TOP 10!

METRO NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
(Gig of the Week: The Blood Red Mountain Band, Whelans, 08/01/07)

‘You might expect to encounter a freewheeling bluegrass ensemble such as the Blood Red Mountain Band in the misty backwoods of Appalachia. But in rainy old Dublin in the depths of winter? To their credit the all-Irish outfit side-step the dreary clichés that are too often prevalent whenever a bunch of outsiders set out to investigate American roots music. Yes, their sound is a yammering gumbo of fiddles, mouth organs, mandolins and accordions. Yet there's more to this crew than dueling banjos and hillbilly yodels. In fact, the Blood Red Mountain Band nurse notably experimental ambitions. Frontman Mark Flynn writes his own material and plays a mean blues guitar; dreamy keyboardist Daniel Shanahan, meanwhile, would seem to harbor notions of one day joining Sufjan Stevens's backing band. Combine all these disparate elements and what you get is an enticing home-brew of traditional music and left-field rock. Dismiss them as an Oh Brother Where Art Thou? Tribute act at your peril. My Interests

Music:

Band Website: bloodredmountainband.com
Band Members: Essentially there are six core members alongside two add-on members, who join in for maybe half the set. Though we are quite an organic operation here at Blood Red Mountain, so depending on the show you may find anywhere between four and twelve performers on-stage.

USUAL SUSPECTS:
1. MARK FLYNN; Lead vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica
2. JOEBY;Bass, electric double bass, guitar, backing vocals
3. IAN DEVLIN;Electric Guitar, charango, mandolin, harmonica
4. MARTINA VON GLOCK; Vocals, glock, melodica, shakers & noise-makers
5. DAVE KEEGAN Drums, photography and general morale
6. TRACY O GRADY; Fiddle and vocals
ACCOMPLICES:
7. LINDY-SUE; button accordian, glockenspiel
8. BRIAN DUGGAN ; Trumpet

We all more or less play everything depending on the best way to do the song. Mark even bought a trumpet and is wrecking his neighbours heads even as we speak (update- mark is crap at trumpet it lives in a better place now). Joeby lives in antique shops buying crazy instruments, and Ian learned CharAngo with his left foot from a blind man in the Peruvian foothills. We bought Martina a jaw harp last week and we all fell around laughing for an hour until she actually got the hang of it and really impressed us (but we were pretty drunk).
Influences: Mark: Books, films, Lindy Sue, Tea, Sandwiches, Grandad still teaching us music, photography, Tea, The Band, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson's Thriller album, Nina Simone, Tea, Cooking beautiful food, eating beautiful food, eating beautiful women, fishing is the way to spend a day, Growing/Brewing our own vegetables/beer, champagne, Ryan Adams, John Irving, Stephen King, Jacqueline Tuck, Granda (again, in general), Roald Dahl, Star Turtle, Tea, Kieron Black, My two dogs Timmy (RIP) and Barkley (plus puppy sparrow now as well!)and the other crazy people in the band. Hallelulah, Woody Guthrie, walking by the sea, fresh air and finally Tea.
Sounds Like: MOONSHINE FOR YOUR EARS...Bar-brawlin' blisterin' hoedowns. Honest to goodness bluegrass love songs. All constructed from the finest country sunsets, broken hearts, and lost highways hidin' the burnt-out shells of journeys long forgotten...
