and many other street corners and peoples ears!
if you'd like me to do a bit of spoken word at your gig sure give me a shout.
Here are some of the things that people have been kind enough to say about me: (oh and if this is percieved as me shooting off on an ego trip skip to the last one)
"Steve’s poems thrill me, energise me, delight me. Truth rings crystal clear. Don’t stop Steve. Don’t stop."
Pat Ingoldsby
"Steve Smith is D poet of his generation- unashamedly accurate and close to the bone. I must say that his work is both beautiful and unnerving all at the same time. The boy is somewhat of a genius. That’s it Stevo. I love you." brother’
Ro Byrne- Lirr & Earthquake Hair
"Stephen Smith is a ball of hydrogen gas that should be pumped into every household across the land.
He knocks seven shades of shite out of all the usual “birds and bees, whey and cheese†nonsense you
find at poetry readings. He sounds like he's walking into a forest full of energy vampires blindfolded with a lightsabre swinging in his hand, they might wound him but he ain't going down without a good fight."
All the best
Jinx Lennon
"One Monday evening in the underbelly of the International bar in Dublin was
when I first came across Stephen Smith. Amid a drain of dreary, crooning
singer-songwriters, a tall confident fella stood up, head and shoulders
above the other night’s performers, chest puffed and broke into oration. What
followed was 10 minutes of fine, eloquent, REAL and brutally honest poetry.
It was rough and scrappy in places and the words flew out of his mouth 100
miles per hour. But it was original and clever and commanded the respect of
everyone in that tiny room. Since then, I've watched Stephen Smith flourish
into a fine poet and philosopher. I wish him all the best for the future and
look forward to watching his star shine loud and bright."
Fiach (crooning dreary singer-songwriter)
"When I first met Stephen I thought he was mad. It turned out that I was right! But what I didn't realize was that it was his mad and loud personality that made him great and it was his willingness to appear foolish that made him wise. The better I got to know Stephen the more I have noticed that big personality being eclipsed by an even bigger and very generous heart. He is a great poet with a great soul, a fighter for those less fortunate and above all a man with the courage to walk to the beat of his own drum!"
Paul Hourican
"To the big Ste monga hungry sex munger do your best I love ya!
Jacqueline Tuck XX Put that in your book and smoke it!"
''Stephen is a big fella with a giant heart. A brave dreamer whose words are honest and searching. He is a new an unexpected friend. Be it in conversation words or letters he sends magic and hope.''
Derrick Devine
"Stephen wears his heart on one sleeve and his mind on the other, which is often refreshing, sometimes revolting, but always very very revealing."
Patrick Bridgeman
"Stephen James Smith: stubborn, loyal, funny, predictably unpredictable, travelling through the one space in many ways, harmless, turcio! stingy! Buys a pint but doesn’t let you forget it for about two years, crap taste in women, an entertainer, more like his mum and dad than he’d ever want to admit! Gifted with words, people and emotions. Going places.... and someone whose thought me a lot over the years.
This alright for you? Or should I say?
Was a principled romantic who wanted to save himself for a girl he loved, and was loved by, then along came a Ukrainian with massive breasts, he easily convinced himself he was in love with (her forever), so he got laid, got dumped and got hurt and has recovered to become a slick womanizer ever since, 'any holes a goal' is a long distance travelled from waiting forever!
Later."
Professor Mark (Buddyman) Jones
"Stephen Smith is a man who can write and perform poetry in the way it should be written and performed...that is to say, he means it."
Love and respect,
Ben Kritikos
‘Beauty and the beast combined, a hulking mess of a man
with piercing eyes leading to a creatively sublime
heart. I'm sure I owe him a few pints of Guinness.’
Matt Westlake
"He's an awful GEEBAG!"
