About Me

Northern Soul: The OTHER Retirement Plan!!!

My Interests

Scooters, Vespas and Lambrettas. DJing and dancing to 45s Soul/Funk/Reggae/Mod. Record collecting. I go to as many scooter rallies as I can around the midwest, and I catch every DJ/dance that I can get to within 200-300 miles (there aren't many). I've been a skin since 1988, and I still dress and claim every day. But my interest in punk rock or fistfighting is near zero, so I'm kinda over here on the side doing my own thing in boots and braces.

Music:

Northern Soul, Rare Funk, Old Reggae/Rocksteady, some Mod/Psych, Latin Boogaloo, French Ye-Ye, exciting dancefloor music on old 45s. I also have some interest in and collect early hip-hop and some 77 punk. Where old-style dancefloor music is concerned I am a fan, a dancer, a DJ, and a collector, in that order.

Movies:

Spartacus, Matewan, Wild in the Streets, Casino Royale, Hairspray, Goodfellas, Small Faces, Lock Stock, Little Big Man, Europa Europa, any Kubrick, Gangster No. 1, Tougher than Leather, La Haine, Sanjuro

Heroes:

Nestor Makhno, Wayne Cochran, Lenny Bruce, Tina Turner, John Brown

Some record-related questions and observations

I just junked like 100 records out of boxes of thousands in a dark, cold, dusty junk shop. 40 cents apiece. Now I'm cleaning them and putting them in sleeves, some, I've discovered, are cracked. How d...

Detroit soul night/rambling

I went to Michigan this weekend, to see my son. While there I looked at the Detroit "free weekly" hipster paper. You know the kind, movie/club/restaraunt listings and phone sex ads in back. I saw a li...
