All men dream, but not equally.

About Me

I grew up on a homestead in Alaska. In college I studied oceanography and rowed on the college crew in northern Cal. After school I kicked around the west coast as a deckhand on a tall ship, backpacked most of Costa Rica's nacional parques while teaching myself how to write, then wandered back up to Alaska. For the last 10+ years I worked as an oceanographer at a marine lab in Alaska, studying climate variation in the North Pacific and Bering Sea. However, after a decade of office politics, long months at sea, and frustration at watching politicians manipulate the science, I decided it was time to attack the problem from a different angle. I moved down here to Portland OR a year ago. I worked for a while at a Barnes and Noble, then was hired by an insurance company as an underwriter. That venture into corporate America was shortlived (and lesson rich), however. Now I am back to where I increasinly find that I like to be: independent, a free agent, one of Morpheus' crew locked in combat with the Matrix. I write freelance for various magazines, I'm slowly chipping away at my own book, and I've apprenticed with two of my friends who are successful ecommerce entrepreneurs. Now is a great time in history to do everything we can to live significantly. Really--we live in an amazing time! Communication technology has compressed distance down to nothing, which has huge ramifications for grassroots efforts to effect change. With great crisis comes great opportunity. Humanity is faced by massive challenges in the coming decades: overpopulation, habitat loss, climate variation, peak oil, and geo-political tensions, to name just a few. Yet we also have the tools and educated awareness to team up and take these challenges on. So let’s get started. The luxury of waiting for someone else to act disappeared last century.
