Billy Mahonie formed in in London near the end of 1997 to play instrumental rock music. The original line-up consisted of Gavin Baker (guitar) , Howard Monk (drums) , Hywell Dinsdale (bass and guitar) and Kevin Penney (bass) . The line-up has at times seen Duncan Brown (bass) and Anthony Barratt (guitar) replace Kevin Penney and Hywell Dinsdale.
BM has released five albums:
The Big Dig (Too Pure 1999)
What Becomes Before (Southern 2001)
Dust (Tritone 2003)
Found (Oof 2005)
Exhale on Mare Street (Unlabel 2006)
BM has also done quite a number of singles, EPs and compilation appearances. Will get details of those up here soon, in the meantime refer to www.billymahonie.com .
BM has toured Europe and UK and have enjoyed numerous radio sessions.
Billy Mahonie’s reputation as an incredibly engaging and very intense live act sets it apart from virtually every other instrumental act. There is no soft plodding around an E(no third) chord for twenty minutes in four four time for these boys.
They play a bizarre type of hardcore metal with kraut and prog rock mixed in, also strong electric folk melodies, and the occasional leap into jazz rock. BM has had pretty much universal praise for their releases and live shows.
