This site is an archive of recordings made in 2003/04. For a variety of reasons, they haven’t seen the light of day until now, but having finally got round to converting the master disks to digital files, I thought it’d be nice to share...
Some background:
I was the singer/ranter in ’thrash techno’ outfit Godlike Bass 1991-4. We never got signed, but we did get to play three nights with Jesus Jones at the Astoria in London - and we’re even still fondly remembered by some people (you’ll need to scroll down a bit).
After GLB split, I spent the next few years getting an actual rent-paying job while teaching myself the rudiments of the guitar. Borrowing a four track, I began recording in earnest...
By 1999, I’d decided to become a one man band going by the name of Laughtrack. The songs released as Laughtrack plus more info about this phase of my musical adventures can be found here .
After Laughtrack came an intensive period of home recording, and this is when the basic tracks for the Civil Dusk songs were laid down (man). However, it was only by working with knob twiddler and former GLB compatriot Mr Chris Butterworth that they exploded into glorious techno-colour (sic) as you hear them now.
(Actually, some of these songs were originally intended to have vocals, but I couldn’t get them to sound right. However, for posterity, you can now hear me doing my best Mark Hollis impersonation on a VOCAL VERSION of If This Goes On.)
It was also during this period that the songs for Adult Education, my other musical project, were written and recorded, also with Chris as engineer. You can hear the songs and read more here .
All I ever really wanted was for people to hear the music, so if you like it, please spread the word. These songs are all enabled for download and should be played as loud as possible. Drop me a message and let me know what you think.
Cheers, Joe
