'Dead Fires & The Lonely Spark' - March 3rd 2008

About Me

Last Harbour are a Manchester-based band playing rustic, cinematically atmospheric songs that rattle and loom, at once epic and intimate, harsh and beautiful, with a strong emotional content. The seven-piece band effectively operate as a collective of like-minded musicians, all of whom are involved in other artistic work including illustration, photography, writing, filmmaking and recording. Singer Kevin Craig’s distinctive papercuts illustrate much of the band’s own artwork.
The band have returned with their most ambitious record yet, which veers from elegantly orchestrated soundscapes to full-blown electric dramas, encompassing birth, marriage and death along the way. Working with producer Richard Formby (Spacemen 3, Herman Dune, Dakota Suite), Last Harbour have turned their backs on the digital revolution, instead using antique equipment to record in glorious analogue onto 2” tape, creating a warm and atmospheric record.
'Dead Fires & The Lonely Spark' is released on 3rd March 2008, and will be distributed by Forte in the UK, and should be available from all good independent music and digital download outlets. Sounds Like: PLAN B : “Great chasmic dramas hide within the swooning dustbowl rumbles of these songs, blackly turbulent like 16 Horsepower or Lift To Experience, with a Wild West baroque feel akin to Okkervil River.”LONDON TOUR DATES : “A brooding, country-noir masterpiece.”UNCUT : “Well worth investigating.”BIG ISSUE : “Like taking a drunken waltz through a candlelit room, Last Harbour delight in all that is nocturnal and sinister.”TERRORIZER : “Occasionally witty, always elegant, Last Harbour is for the discerning ear.”DROWNED IN SOUND : “[Dead Fires…] unearths a bewitching panorama of dawn-rising rhythms drenched in melancholy. Tracks like ‘The Revenger’s Waltz’ and ‘Science Song’ are gargantuan, bombastic throbs that leave temples reeling in a gruesome storm of vehement cymbal crashes, while ‘The Accident’'s intrepid juxtaposition of swooping violins and weeping keys escalates as an exhilarating crescendo in which [singer Kevin] Craig recites his lung-busting proclamations with the velocity of a devout street-preacher.”
