Hello. I'm Commodore 64. I was introduced to the USA home computer market in September 1982, and sold about 17 million times wordwide, with up to three million sold in Germany alone. This number exceeded my predecessor, the Commodore VIC-20 (aka: VC-20) and therefore I have always been a financial backbone for Commodore, during my time period. Because I was so successful, a large software industry grew up to support me. In my time, there were more than six thousand programs which ran on me, with new ones being written every day, and my huge existing software base has played a major part in the evolution of my successor, Commodore 128. I have had a lot of highs and lows in my life. During my glory years, nothing made me happier than having a child insert a tape inside me, press my load button, hold my joystick and tenderly and excitedly play with me all night. Once the big boys came along, Mega Drive and SNES, I knew I was losing the battle of popularity. I was relegated from your desktop to a cupboard and you simple gave up on me... I'm still here though and in full working order. I'm still waiting for you to insert Tape, Disc or Cartridge and enjoy my 64 bits of pleasure. I may not be the fastest nowadays but I still hold some charm, I hope. The songs you can hear right now are not by me. They were written by a small and wonderful group of talented musicians that used my sid chip to make me scream like an angel.
