The band was launched in 1984. The typical element of their music was the"exessive"use of the organ. The first two records, a 6-track mini album under the title "The Multicoloured Shades" and the LP "House Of Wax" were released on the independent label "Last Chance" in Dortmund. The third record "Sundome City Exit" was released in 1987 by Virgin Records. This record included the song "Teen Sex transfusion", which was released as a single and became a hit. After the moderate success of their follow-LP "Ranchero!" the band disbanded in 1990. During a Re-Union of the band in early 2002 a compilation CD appeared.
On 8th of april 2002 the singer Pete Barany died by a suicide.
After this tragic situation the band finally separated....
Hank Ray about Multicoloured Shades:
"The late seventies / dawning of the early eighties saw the advent of exciting ‘new’ bands recycling sounds of decades gone by.
Bands like the Cramps had spearheaded a movement of trash / r’n’r fanatics exploring the vaults of 50’s b-movie r’n’r culture and 60’s punk. Following on their heels, exciting new psychedelic / garage enthusiasts kept sweeping the nations with their own enthusiastic sounds... bands like the Slickee Boys, the Dream Syndicate, the Fuzztones and the Multicoloured Shades.
I remember running into Pete Barany, singer and lyricist of the Multicoloured Shades at a punk concert in early 1984. We were both devoted fans of psychedelic/garage rock and 50’s trash/rock-a-billy with bits and pieces of cool country thrown in. We spend the night at the bar in collector-geek conversation, talking about the most obscure stuff we had recently dug up and the plans and hopes for our own bands.
This was the first of many night-sessions of conversation we would have in the years to come... We became friends and that friendship lasted all through the years until Pete’s untimely death in early 2002.
When Eddie Wagner (co-founder of the Multicoloured Shades) approached me with the idea to write a few words as an introduction to the long- overdue web presentation of their band, I instantly agreed to do so. I’ve known Pete Barany for almost twenty years. A warm-hearted person and devoted music lover. And most of all, a good friend.
