ACHTUNG BABY – BIOGRAPHYIn 1991, U2 commissioned Godley & Crème to make a video for their new single ‘Even Better than the real thing’. After probably watching Queen’s ‘The Miracle’ video, somebody came up with the grand idea of using four ‘look-a-likes’ interspersed with the real thing. One of the four, a Bass player called Clarke, went on to form the world’s first U2 tribute band, which were aptly named ‘The Doppelgangers’.Up north in Rotherham, two guys called Luke Pepper & Dean Bush were putting together their own band. After numerous set changes, they soon found themselves playing more & more U2 songs, until eventually, they had a whole set learned. It wasn’t until weeks later that the guys decided to become a tribute to U2 and the search began for a Bass player.Luckily, Steve Kean answered the ad and apart from the fact that he knew all the U2 songs, he was also the ‘spit’ of Adam Clayton. Finding a front man to match Bono’s strong vocal would prove difficult, but after trying out around five others, it was decided to give Steve’s brother a try. After a good audition, Gary almost forced his way into the group and made the position his very own.Over the next few weeks, the band put together a set of ‘Achtung Baby’ songs and thus the logical choice of band name soon followed. In 1994, the original Achtung Baby played their first gigs. Some pubs were played and they even tried their hand in Working Men’s Clubs! After quickly finding their feet and making numerous changes to the set-list, the band started to play nationally, but it wasn’t until a gig at the ‘Fibbers bar’ in York, that the band realised just how big the tribute scene could be. (Thank you Doppelgangers for cancelling!)Achtung Baby then signed to a management company based in Dudley and a whole new world opened up. Gigs were now played in larger venues and the set-list was constantly changed between the ‘Love town’ tour of 1989 and the ‘Zoo TV’ show. The band even surprised die-hard U2 fans by covering numbers such as Acrobat and Lady with the Spinning Head.During this busy period, the band played the massive Sheffield Arena and it’s close neighbour the Don Valley Stadium, both to thousands of people. Achtung Baby were now beginning to eclipse The Doppelgangers and began to feature in fanzines such as ‘Silver & Gold’ and the ‘Zooropean’.In 1996, the band hired a new singer who was fresh from TV’s ‘Stars in their eyes’. After a few shaky gigs, the band once more settled into the ‘Rattle & Hum’ set and tore they way across the whole of Britain. Ireland was soon to follow and after some marvellous management by John Ford, they got to play the massive Point Depot in Dublin, to 7,000 people! (Thank you for our copy of the show that was videoed on the night!)By 1997, the band had become the biggest U2 tribute in the world, but just before a sell-out show in Birmingham, Andrew Bagnall left to join The Doppelgangers! Strangely enough, The Doppelgangers singer, Wayne Taylor soon joined Achtung Baby and thus began an even better period for the band. Within weeks, Achtung Baby were performing in Europe and playing to massive crowds in Portugal and Holland.U2 had also chosen Holland to start their European ‘Pop’ tour and thanks to the Zooropean magazine, Achtung Baby were invited to play along side U2 at the massive ‘Feyenoord Stadium’. Arriving in style in their very own ‘Pop-mart’ tour bus, the band were accidentally led into the real U2’s changing room, thus resulting in a very red-faced head of security!During the rest of the day, the band got to see U2’s roadies at work and even Dallas Shoo made an appearance, going through Edge’s effects with ease, culminating in an impromptu performance of ‘Until the end of the World’.
ACHTUNG BABY BIOGRAPHY PART 2The next day saw Achtung Baby play to a large crowd of fans and after posing for photo’s on the original car used for the Achtung Baby album cover, the band were treated to a live performance of ‘One’ by U2, which was broadcast to Britain for ‘Top of the Pops’. For the rest of 1998, Achtung Baby toured Europe and performed on numerous TV and radio sessions.By January 1998, Andrew Bagnall was back after finding out the grass wasn’t greener. The band took on the latest set-list from U2 and performed to sell-out crowds in every major city in the U.K. including regular gigs at the Olympia theatre in Dublin. At the end of 1999, founder member Luke left to pursue an all-together different career, but soon headed back to music to help write the soundtracks for two movies. The original Achtung Baby had folded, leaving the market open to other acts. (Including son of Achtung Baby)Well, after eight years, the original band is back together and they’ve even managed to rope in Luke’s first choice of singer, the fantastic Mitch who hails from Liverpool. The guys have settled on their previous name, Achtung Baby and they’ve added the ‘Original’ bit to save on confusion!“Achtung Baby…this is a name Charles Manson stole from The Beatles…we’re stealing it back!â€
