About Me

I'm sick of small talk. I only want large talk.

I'm a freelance music writer with articles published in various magazines and websites, including VH1, Relix, CMT, JamBase, Home Grown Music Network, Jambands, Signal to Noise, SonicNet and more.
Check out my interview with bluegrass legend Peter Rowan by clicking here and my review of the recent Jim White concert by clicking here.

My Interests

Writing and recording music, going to concerts and festivals, spending time with friends, camping and hiking, reading, writing, frisbee golf, animals, subversive cartoons and mountain biking. The amount I like each thing goes in exact alphabetical order.

I'd like to meet:

Creative, happy people. And these folks:

Music:

I like rock, jazz, funk, bluegrass, African, reggae, zydeco, World, jambands, pretty much everything except speed metal and opera. However, a speed metal band with an opera singer would be cool. I'm into the Beatles, Phish, Frank Zappa, Bela Fleck, They Might be Giants, Grateful Dead, Ween, Michael Franti and Spearhead, XTC, Miles Davis, Flaming Lips, Donna the Buffalo, Herbie Hancock, Robert Randolph, Jim White, Sufjan Stevens, Ben Folds, Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco Band, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Michael Hedges, John McLaughlin, Leo Kottke, Thievery Corporation, Medeski Martin and Wood, Dylan, Stones, Floyd, Zeppelin, Bowie, Tenacious D, Mamadou Diabate, Sun Ra, John Lurie, Dr. Dog, The Apples in Stereo, The Bees, Malajube, and the Royal Rascals.

Movies:

I like comedies, documentaries and any movie where I can't tell what's about to happen. Favorites include Yellow Submarine, Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Waking Life, American Beauty, School of Rock, Dazed and Confused, Best in Show, Office Space, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Love and Death, and The Magic Christian.

Television:

"I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book." -- Groucho Marx
TV is evil, except for the shows I like. Non-evil shows are limited to the Simpsons, South Park, the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. Slightly evil shows I occasionally corrupt myself with include The Office, 30 Days, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Wonder Showzen.

Books:

I mostly read non-fiction, although I love writers like Tom Robbins, Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams who write fiction with an eye towards reality, or Hunter S. Thompson who blurred the line completely. Some favorites include The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac, Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates by Tom Robbins, Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, I Seem to be a Verb by R. Buckminster Fuller, and The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff. Currently reading The Secret Life of Plants. I'd tell you about it, but as you can see, it's a secret.

Heroes:

Either Nixon or John Lennon - I have trouble telling them apart. Whichever one was in the Byrds.
