Once upon a time there came a DJ by way of the military that was a transplant from New York who was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base (back before it became an Airport) here in Austin. This DJ named Ashton Irons aka DJ Cassanova had a passion for music that eventually carried him into music production. What Cassanova did was what most considered to be the first well recognized rap song to come out of Austin. The song was called “Army Man†and it was by a group called “The Project Crewâ€. This song helped Austinites to identify more closely with the concept of Rap Music and actually did real well with attracting a fan base. “Army Man†also helped Cassanova to become somewhat of a living legend amongst Rap historians here in the capital city. DJ Cassanova and The Project Crew were able to do some touring with groups that were growing in national popularity back in the 80’s which were NWA, Stethosonic, and MC Hammer. After leaving the military, Cassanova was asked to DJ a club in Japan while in the midst of a 3 month tour.
As a producer, Cassanova also produced some nationally well known material. One of the hits he produced was a dance remix to the song “Too Much Booty in the Pants†by Sound Master T. He also put together some demos for the R & B artist Shante Savage. In later years he did a lot of production for Austin Rap Artist’s. These artist were Papa Chuck an artist that was signed to Electra Records, The Cooley Girls, Simply Mackin’, the group 512 and Lil’ Black, Overlord & T.W. to name a few.
Today, DJ Cassanova’s name can still be heard around Austin. He still owns and operates a recording & production studio here. He DJed at club KAOS (2003-2004) in conjunction with the Beat 104.3 FM here in the capital city and from there moved over and put in work with Hot 93.3 FM also located here in Austin.Cassanova Is currently Dj'ing @ Oslo on saturday nights
In the future, Cassanova wants to continue to have a quite impact on the music industry as a whole. He wants to keep surprising people that may not know exactly how far his talents reach across the country and for that matter…may not know how far his talents have reached to different parts of the world.
