BIOGRAPHYEvery so often an iconic figure emerges – one that needs no deliberate branding or over-stated introductions. This notion is totally expressed in the unforgettable Four Kornerz experience.
Since bursting onto the music scene in 2004 (when the band got signed by UB1 Music management), Four Kornerz has established itself as one of the UK’s leading and brightest prospects for live music and entertainment. The core-band is made up of four sibling brothers: Deji (27), TJ (25), Vidal (23) and Daniel (21) who combined stunning vocals with a fresh approach to music production. Their debut single “Clap Clapâ€, released in the same launch year, gained rave reviews from across the music sector including Blues & Soul, Touch, I-DJ, Cross Rhythms, Live Listings and DJ Mag who gave the single five stars “one of the most incisive and irresistible soul/r&bers aroundâ€. The single also went on to receive Record of the Week at both UK leading urban stations Choice FM and BBC 1Xtra. The Soulful House remix gained top five positions on various international House charts including Faize and TMP.
The band’s ability to embrace a variety of musical sounds from Funk, R&B, Soul and Jazz to more traditional Nigerian rhythms from their homeland – has all contributed to what many see as a unique and refreshing approach to music delivery.
But it’s in the powerful backdrop of Gospel music that the band has honed its craft thanks to a strong Church upbringing and a genuine appreciation for the music form.
Since 2004, Four Kornerz has shared the stage with a massive selection of artists covering a broad spectrum of genres. These include Joss Stone, Lemar, Ms Dynamite, Omar, Jocelyn Brown, Corinne Bailey Rae, London Community Gospel Choir, Karen Clark Sheard, Shola Ama, Trin-i-tee 5:7, Kato, The Tribe, Blush UK, Sabrina (Misteeq), Raymond & Co, Alexander Grove, The Band With No Name, to name but a few.
The brothers showed great potential in their pre-management years of UB1 Music by winning two regional song contests and reaching the London final heats of GMTV Gospel Challenge (2003). With management set in place, their meteoric rise continued and in their first year they pick up the Gospel Entertainment Music (GEM) Award for Best Newcomer Group 2004. The Urban Music Awards (UMA) gave a nomination nod the following year for Best Gospel Actand the band eventually won that very same award in 2006.
The band’s strong focus on delivery exhilarating stage sessions has seen them appear at numerous key events like MTV Europe’s Base Lounge (2005) where Four Kornerz opened the night with an explosive set featuring the heart-stopping ballad “Cry No More†and the signature Soul-Funk cut “Clap Clapâ€. The show also featured UK R&B songstress Keisha White and Mercury Music Prize winner Dizzee Rascal. In June 2005 the band beat 400 other hopeful acts in ITV London’s “Battle of the Bands†to win a spot at the 02 Music Wireless Festival which took place in Hyde Park headlined by such Alternative acts as New Order, Basement Jaxx and Kasabian.
For two years running (2005/2006), Four Kornerz has been one of the headline acts on the landmark Young Voices tourwhich travels across key arenas in the UK and Ireland with combined audiences in excess of 100,000. Aside from performing original material, the appealing factor of Young Voices is the memorable artist collaborations where Four Kornerz performed the classic “Lean On Me†with Joss Stone, Lemar and Ms Dynamite.
Four Kornerz has also appeared at a number of Europe locations (Germany, Holland, Ireland and Slovakia) and additional key festivals like Greenbelt, Creation Fest and Festival of Life.
The pending 2007 debut album marks another major milestone for the band, one which both fans and industry insiders are waiting for. The new lead single from the album “Gonna Make It†has already scored a hit with the UK underground Garage scene, obtaining firm support from major players like DJ EZ (London’s Kiss 100fm) and Control-S. Such is the noise that this white-promo remix has created, UK Garage label In-Ctrl Recordings picked up the single for exclusive release on the underground Garage market with a further three remixes featured from Wideboys (“Sambuca†hit) and R-Kane & Domino (Pure Garage: Main Room Sessions).
The Four Kornerz’ ability to adapt and appeal to such contrasting music tastes is what has ensured its success and longevity as a top UK independent act. Singer/songwriters and producers in their own right, Deji, TJ, Vidal and Daniel are poised to take their exciting inspirational sounds to the four corners of the world.
