INTERVIEW WITH SUZY SOLAR BY INFINITE TRANCE, SEPT 2007
We recently had a chance to speak with one of the most recognizable female artist in the trance today, Suzy Solar.. She is currently in the studio working on her next full length artist album, which she is collaborating with many of the top DJ and producers on the scene.. Check out the awesome interview and catch Solar Power Sessions each week on Danceradio.GR…
IT: You were born in Miami and have lived in Florida all of your life, how has this shaped where you are today and have you ever thought of living anywhere else?
SS: I’m proud to be from Miami. It’s a very cool city! My parents moved me to central Florida in the redneck town, Zephyrhills, when I was about 10 years old. I didn’t fit in at all there, so the only thing I could do was to embrace my individuality. I carry that attitude with me now in my music career and it shows in my unique sound. I’ve thought about moving to the San Francisco area or Holland, but I have a great life and beautiful house now near the Tampa bay.
IT: When you entered the music scene after High School, you were in a metal band called Dead, what did you learn from that experience?
SS: Believe it or not, singing in a metal band was an excellent introduction to music production as I know it today. I played on all of the different instruments and effects while the band was on break, and I learned music theory on my own from a book. When I got into EDM production, I was already familiar with the musical aspect, which made it much easier to learn how to use the computer software necessary to produce EDM. I’m currently using Cubase, Reason, Access Virus Indigo, and lots of VSTs.
IT: After Dead, You went to college to be a Psychiatrist with specialization in paraphilias, what does sexual deviations entail?
SS: I find the subject extremely fascinating. Paraphilias entail the spectrum of sexual deviations ranging from harmless fetishes to criminally aberrant behavior. There actually is a shortage of paraphilia specialists in the State of Florida, so it would have been a very profitable and interesting career for me. However, being an entertainer is what’s really in my heart, so I changed my mind and studied broadcasting.
IT: When you changed your major to broadcasting, you produced and hosted your own music video show “The Morbid Underground” under the name Suzy Morbid, What was it like being a TV Host?
SS: That was the most surreal time of my life! People recognized me everywhere, but they got me confused with the character I was playing on TV. My character was a cannibal vampire, sort of like Elvira. I’d get mobbed by fans who thought I really liked to be bit on the neck!
IT: How did the name Suzy Morbid change to Suzy Solar?
SS: Well I can’t be an uplifting trance DJ with a name like Morbid, now can I? LOL!! I needed a name that would bring to mind energy and light. Solar does the trick quite nicely, so I trademarked it.
IT: What spurred you to change your musical outlet from rock/metal to electronica, specifically trance?
SS: As a child, there was a specific sound that I heard in my head, but hadn’t been invented yet. After my metal band had broken up, I heard trance for the first time in the early 90s. It was very close to the music that I had heard in my head. Right then, I knew that it was meant to be!
IT: Do you think female artist and DJ’s have an advantage/disadvantage in the industry?
SS: I actually don’t stop to think about that. I just play my music and enjoy life. The biggest disadvantage for me is that I don’t travel alone. The biggest advantage, I would guess, is the unique marketing point.
IT: How does establishing Solar Power Music and Solar Power Sessions radio show in the early decade help to further your career?
SS: When my DJ career took off in 1999, my partner and I had become incorporated as Solar Power Music Inc, which was a necessary step in my career to become a legit, full time DJ/producer. Playing on Internet radio is how I had gotten my name out there in the world. I first started playing on trancedomain.com, which landed me 2 mix CD deals on Neurodisc/Capitol Records and I started touring internationally. Then I got my own show, “Solar Power Sessions,” and it’s proven to be a major outlet for me to connect with the world. The show is going on its 6th year anniversary in October. You can catch me and special guests spinning every Tues 5-7pm EST/22:00-24:00 GMT on the trance stream at www.danceradio.gr.
IT: Many of your tracks including Ocean of Love and Samurai feature your vocals, Is there any artist that you would like to enlist for vocals on a future track?
SS: As a matter of fact, I’m already collaborating with Catherine W, a vocalist from California. Also, Catherine’s just gotten one of her tracks signed to Armada so you will hear more from her soon!
IT: Currently, you are in the studio working on a new album, how is it coming along?
SS: The album is going great! It’s extremely tough having to produce ten tracks at once, write lyrics, and sing on them, even with the collaborations. Even so, I’m enjoying the wicked journey along the way. I’m gaining technical knowledge, business contacts, new friends, great experiences, inspiration, and personal insight because of the album. I can assure you that the outcome will be a fresh new take on trance/EDM.
IT: Have you decided on a name or release date yet?
SS: I have a very good idea for the album title, and it hasn’t been done yet… but I can’t give that info away at this time… hehe! A release date hasn’t been set yet; it’s still too early to say.
IT: In the studio, you are set to work with Thomas Bronzwaer, Roland Andriese of Vast Vision, Terry Bones, B.E.N., Elucidate and Catherine, Chris Bernhardt & DJ Falk, and Jox & Dan Nitro for collaborations on the new album, how does bringing all these different names enhance the production process?
SS: Each person has their own sound, and different creative ideas and technical knowledge. Everyone has something unique to contribute to the album. The chemistry is also different with each producer. For instance, with Thomas, I feel more technically inspired for music production. With Roland, his presence gave me a jolt of abstract creativity. To my surprise, I found it easy to write several song lyrics after hanging with him.
IT: Are you planning to tour to support the new album after its release?
SS: Yes, the label is planning on giving me tour support as a vocalist with back up musicians. I’m also going to be DJing at clubs and raves internationally.
IT: You list one of your goals in life is to master the Japanese language, do you have any other goals you would like to acheive in the near future?
SS: Later on, I’d like to get back into video production. I want to produce my own music videos one day, and possibly produce or write a movie or cartoon series.
IT: What do you have in store for 2008?
SS: DJing, singing, producing, touring, and what ever else that 2008 has in store for me!
IT: Finally, Do you have any advice for artists looking to break into the limelight?
SS: Yeah but all that could fill a book… lol! My favorite advice is to stay true to what’s in your heart. No mater what’s standing in your way, you can overcome adversity and make your dreams come true.
Infinite|Trance wants to Thank you for an great interview and all the best in the future!

Hi Suzy here... below is a section that I've written for my personal page. Please go to my artist profile at myspace.com/djsuzysolar or my website at suzysolar.com for my tour dates, updates on my music career, etc.
Because of my busy schedule, I have moderators who are here to update my Myspace pages and to help me answer my messages. It may take me up to a month to answer the fan mail that I want to reply to personally. Please be patient if you have sent us a message:-) Thanks!
My background: From early childhood, I knew that I would grow up to be an entertainer. Music and creative writing had always been my main interests ever since I could remember. At six years old, I jumped on the piano for the first time and played "Silent Night" by ear. I took ballet when I was in kindergarten, then some modeling classes in my pre-teen years. I got my first paid gig as a singer in 1985, and was winning various dance & thespian contests. After graduating high school, I joined the metal band, Dead (Florida) as their lead singer. When jamming with musicians, I took the initiative to jump on the different instruments to familiarize myself with playing keyboards, bass, guitar, and drums. I wound up getting my own keyboard and a short scale bass guitar. When Dead broke up, my parents and older friends told me that I would grow out of the music phase and that I'd better go to school and get a real job. I quit music and went to college with an interest of becoming a psychiatrist specializing in paraphilias (sexual deviations). I soon got the urge to satisfy my artistic needs so I changed my mind and studied broadcasting. I produced and hosted my own music video TV show in 1991. Two years later, I was thrown off the air for obscenity and almost went to jail for ten years for broadcasting punk rocker GG Allin defecating onstage. Since broadcasting defecation wasn't technically illegal, they weren't able to arrest me. The State of Florida then made a law in my honor to include defecation in the Florida statutes for obscenity. My license for television production had been revoked and my life was in shambles. I began to find consolation in raving. Years later, at 27 years old, my DJ friend played Solar Stone's "The Calling" at one of my house parties. At that moment, it suddenly became perfectly clear that my calling is to go for my childhood dream of becoming a DJ, vocalist, producer, and writer. My DJ career took off almost immediately, but my producing took more time and patience; I had to "start over" as a musician to learn how to use the software necessary to produce trance/EDM. (I use Cubase and Reason.) My deep love for trance makes it all worthwhile though:-) I want to help people feel the uplifting and emotionally healing properties that I experience when I hear it. When people tell me how my music touches them, it's the best compliment I could ever get; I feel like I've made a difference in the world. Getting back into music has been the best decision I've ever made, and I thank my lucky stars every day that I'm happy and successful in my career!
