I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

What can I say? Best to find out in person. I have been (correctly!) referred to as both "genius" and "dumbass". I shall neither "Holla" nor "LOL". I am originally from New England, where we have proper ways of doing things. I moved to Los Angeles towards the end of 2005 after many years in New York City.

My Interests

Singing, writing songs, playing guitar, women, travel, the beach, reading, romance, cooking, splitting hairs, baseball.

I'd like to meet:

People who are interesting to talk to. People who respect themselves and others. People of integrity. People who are comfortable with paradox.

Music:

All kinds! Especially the Rolling Stones, Dylan, Neil Young, the Byrds, Elvis, Sam Cooke, Miles Davis, Lucinda Williams, Tom Petty, The Jam, the Harry Smith Anthology, &c. Stuff with GOOD LYRICS.

Movies:

Once Upon A Time In The West, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Don't Look Back, Badlands, Lost in Translation, Downfall, Gosford Park, Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Plein Soleil, Local Hero, The Shawshank Redemption, Sling Blade

Television:

OK, I watch altogether too much TV even though I know it's crap. I am, however, very happy to NOT have cable. I like "Lost", "King of the Hill", "Arrested Development", "South Park", "Seinfeld", lots of PBS stuff.

Books:

Heart of Darkness, The Iliad, Underworld, Sentimental Education, Ragtime, High Fidelity, anything by Faulkner, any interesting nonfiction. I subscribe to The Economist and The New Yorker .

Heroes:

Bridge

OK, so it's a game for little old ladies. But it's also mentally challenging and lots of fun. I used to play regularly in college and for some years after, but haven't done it at all since I move...

My Dad

It's Father's Day today, and I figure the great majority of you folks on my friends list here on MySpace have probably have never met my Dad. I think a picture will say it better than words: Here he ...

HOLLYWOOD ON FIRE

I took this right out on the street in front of my building just a couple of minutes ago. It looks to be right on the edge of the hills, since the Roosevelt and the TV Guide building are just up on H...

Ringtones

I know this sounds dumb, but I really want to get one that loops the saxophone lick from "Turn the Page" by Bob Seger. As James Brown used to say, "Can I get some help?"

Get it?

(outside Lava Lounge, 2.20.2007) J.D.: You know what they say: all clichés are based on fact! ME: Actually, that's not true. I'll be here all week folks!...

I have nothing against Gerald Ford

I sort of wish he had not pardoned Nixon, but on the whole he seemed a rather decent fellow. And he may, in fact, have been more historically important than James Brown, who died only one day earlier...

Hungry for Power

OK, so I was reading this article on slate.com today, and it got me thinking a bit more than usual about energy use. We here in America are the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, and we...

Damn Yankees

I don't know how many times I've said it before, and I'm sure it will come up again; the commentators certainly did not fail to mention it: good pitching will always beat good hitting. Sure, it wasn't...
