AThe heartbreaking, gutsy story of SANDY - LA CHICA DEL REGGAE La Loba is one that we all can learn from. She has re-entered the music world after battling for her life only to find out that she has been temporarily replaced. The true ORIGINAL FIRST LADY OF REGGAETON is back to reclaim her throne. It is so hard to know how to begin this interview. There is so much I know that I have to cover because everyone needs to know your whole story. So I guess I will begin by saying Thank you very much for giving the Indie Street Latino readers and I a chance to get to know you. When was it that you FIRST noticed your love of music?Mom said at the age of 2, I use to grab the hairbrush & make beleive it was a microphone. I use to love to sing & dance in front of the mirror. My maternal grandmother always used to say, I was the Star of the family, for I also have 3 brothers and two sisters, something like the brady bunchThat's great! You and your sister were the original CHICAS DEL REGGAE. What made your sister decide to step back and let you shine by yourself?Yes, with my sister Rosy, we started the group called "Las Chicas Del Reggae" in 1990. Rosy fell in love & married in 95, she moved away to Virginia and I continued as a solo act.Do you regret that she is no longer performing with you?I don't regret it, however I miss her dearly. Our voices matched perfectly and we both enjoyed traveling & performing together.I hear ya. So is she your biggest fan now?Yes, I think so.....She better be!!! Actually, Rosy is always the first person to hear all my new stuff, and she is my biggest critic. Her opinion means a lot to me, I know she will always give me her honest opinion. That's great! It's always nice to have an honest voice around. When you did the song Pum Pum Papi Papi the answer to El Generals Pum Pum Mami Mami song, was your sister still in the group with you?Yes, Pum Pum was recorded in 1995 right before she left, and was released in 1997 under the Hush Label CD called Reggae Spices, a compilation of various artists. What are some of the festivals and shows you did back then and who did you have the pleasure of performing with?Well, we did lots of them, The 1996 USA Puerto Rican pageant, The Puerto Rican Festival in Bayfront park, where we met Andy Montanez, Frankie Ruiz, Bonny Cepeda, Lefty Perez and many more. We also performed at most of the Caribbean Festival&..39;s, with artists such as Buju Banton, Shaba, Third World, Maxy Priest, Calle 8 where we saw the late Celia Cruz, La reina de la Salsa. We did so many i can't recall. We met many wonderful people in the process. The biggest thrill for us, was working with "El General". We were chosen to be the opening act for him when he came to Miami in concert at The Cameo Theather in Miami Beach. "EL General" was my idol back then, so of course I was walking on air.Did you get the chance to record with any artists back then?Back then featurings were not very popular, so the answer is no. I didn't record with anyone.Did you and your sister record any full-length albums?Good question. We did cut a few tracks. We recorded more than 6 songs, however never released our production. It was very complex, for we worked with different producers that never put anything together.Ok. Yea I know it's hard to find time to get songs that everyone can agree on and get a full-length album done. You also did some acting back then. When did you find the time for acting? What movies have you been in?Acting to me, is like singing. It came naturally. I studied Acting for a couple of years in high school. I remember my first role was of "Sandy" from the movie "Grease" in high school. I audition & competed with more then 20 girls and got the part. It went as far as Disney World, it was a musical. I also acted as an x-tra with actor John Leguizamo in the movie "The Pest", filmed here in Miami, a 3 day event. It was fun and I didn't have to do much, just walk behind him, but hey...I got paid! That sounds like fun! I am glad that you liked it. You have made so many sacrifices in your life for your music. You even lost a husband due to your dedication to the industry. Has it been hard for you to stay on track? Do you feel that you made the right choices in what you have done in your career so far? It's funny how you said that, yes sacrifice has always been my best friend. My first husband met me performing and at first was very supportive, however after being apart on many occations due to my hectic schedule he decided to give me a choice, Him or The Music, and I chose what I love the most, MY MUSIC. Shortly after we divorced. I have battled many obstacles in my way, but I truly feel that God has always been there every step of the way and somehow I always manage to survive and overcome all the obsticles.Wow. That's a real trooper. I hope that everyone that reads this will get a better understanding for just how hard you have had it and a deep respect for your dedication. When your Dr gave you the news about your Cancer and told you that you had 3 months to live and you could either to choose to try and live longer with an operation or music. What was your initial reaction?OMG i get teary eyed when i hear that word CANCER. I did not know how to deal with such an illness, I felt so many different emotions at once. I was sad, scared, confused and it was by far the hardest decision i had to make. I chose life and decided to put on my boxing gloves and knock out my opponent. When I was diagnosed with cancer I had recently re-married and God blessed me with an awesome man that stood by me and carried me when i was down. He wiped my tears away, and said to me, "WE will fight this battle and win.Wow. That's nice. So with the struggle that you went through you had someone by your side. That is soooooo sweet. Are you still together? He was my strengh along with my family and closest friends I call angels who prayed for me and helped me win the battle. Yes, I am happy to say that I am still very happily married and in love. his name is Miguel Angel, but i call him "King Michael", for he is the king in my castle. Both in my heart and in my life. A wonderful man, who you will meet, for wherever you see "La Chica Del Reggae", you will see him. When was it that you were diagnosed? In 1998How long have you been in remission?Well this past September, it has been 7 years. Thank GodWhile you were recuperating, did you follow the industry?Yes i did, i dedicated my time reading about the music industry in a great book titled "This Business Of Music"., a great book, which i encorouge any music lover or upcoming new artist to buy and read. To learn the industry and to take the correct steps.Nice. I will have to go and pick that up.Yes, you doHow did you feel when you found out that there were other women out there claiming to be the first female Reggaeton artists? It never really bothered me, due to the fact that I was already retired from the industry and many people that heard and listened to my song, never really met the artist. I and those close to me knew the truth and it was all good.Since your re-entry into the music industry how have you been treated? With respect, thank God. I have found a few bumps here and there, but after being a cancer survivor, they are no match for me .The industry needs to know, that I am back, and back to stay. I love to make people feel happy and to touch hearts and through my music I am able to do that. What else can a Chica ask for?
All jokes aside, I have been very happy with my comeback, I have met many wonderful people that have helped me and support me 100%, and for this I am thankfulDo you feel a little cheated that you were not able to continue your career and be known as the first female Reggaeton artist?Yes I do, but I am a true believer of that famous quote, "Everything happens for a reason" and I have always seen a star in my path, it has never gone away, and with all the love and support I will reach it! I feel so honored to have been chosen by you, "Indie Street Latino" magazine to say the real story behind, "La Chica Del Reggae', and for this I am eternally greatful that your readers will learn the truth.Do you feel it will be a battle to re-claim the status that you once held?Everything is possible with God by my side. I don't really care for the title, just to let people know that there was "LA REINA" de Reggae back in the 90's and now. I am back to shout it out loud and clear. Are there any artists out there that you havent yet worked with that you would like to?Yes, there are. One of my favorites is Don Omar. It is funny how some people have called me the female Don Omara....our music style is very similar. As well as my good friend, "EL MEXICANO", who will be featured on my CD. We are currently working together. "EL Mexicano's" new CD "PA LA KALLE", has a song entitled "Potranca" in which you will hear me.Do you have any advice for up and coming artists? My advice to them is to focus, learn and pursue theire dream. It is not an easy road. It is not always glamorous, in fact there is a high price to pay in many occations, however if they love music and want it bad everything is possible.Do you have anything to say to your fans?Yes I do, that I am so greatful to them. I feel very blessed to have many wonderful people who enjoy my music and support me. I love each and everyone of them. I have all my fans in my daily prayers, for without them, there would not be "La Chica Del Reggae".Do you have anything to say to the other females that have been claiming your position while you were battling for your life?OMG, As a matter of fact I do. I wish them health and strength to continue what they are doing, however I am back. I plan on letting everyone know that I am the Original "Dandada", with all do respect and that the Original Queen is back to take the industry by storm. I am not one to brag but "LA CHICA IS BACK" more mature, more knowledgeble and better than ever so luck out,,,,,step aside and watch me.So what new and exciting things are you doing in your career now?Well, I currently havce two compilation Cd's out in the market, "Perreo Total" in which you will find two of my songs, "Mi Tete" and "Aqui Llegue", and "Cross Over Cd" with "LLAMAME" in stores now, so run & pick them up!!! Also I have had the pleasure to feature with a very well known salsero "Alex Leon" y los leones de la Salsa, we did the remix to his hit song "HAY EL AMOR", in which I rap, a SalsaTON I call it, and that song wou will find in his new CD "Aqui D'nuevo". As i mentioned before I am also featured on Mexicano's new cd "PA LA KALLE" with Potranca. I am also working with a new upcoming star, YANKEL, EL CAMPESINO", which just finished earning the title of the new reggaeton star on Univison. He is featuring several of my songs as well. When is your new full-length cd going to be coming out?I am working on that, I am half way done, and my cd should be released before the summer of 2006.Do you have a name for it already?"Regrese PA Quedarme" is what I have in mind.Do you have any shout outs that you would like to give?Special shout out to my mother "Margarita" (LA FLOR MAS BONITA), who has always been there & supported me through it all, and my father Luis Amador who made me who I am today. Rosy, my dearest sister and my entire family.
