Interview by Angela Star for Indie Street Latino MagazineI am here today with one of my close personal friends and I thought it was about time that I interviewed him since he has been making noise in the industry for so long. Malcriao how are you doing today?
Good, is great to finally get the opportunity to appear on a magazine that so many try to get in.Hahaha. Why don't you explain to everyone exactly how you got your start in the industry.
Well a while back in the year 2001 I had just finished a sentence in jail and I got on this phone chat line where I got invited by Dj Erick El Veterano to many of the parties that they were doing in Orlando, Fl where I met many people. In Miami I met a Colombian and a Dominican that started Reggaeton Nights @ this Place named Gusto’s Bar and Grill where they ask me to host the parties every Saturday. One day the Colombian guy, Edgar told me to go with him and introduced me to no other than Lisa M, who introduced me many people in the industry like… Vico C, Nicky Jam and many more during this time. I became Lisa M's assistant and through her I met the people who I needed to meet, since she has always been well respected in the industry.Wow. How long were you Lisa M's assistant? AND What do you mean you just finished a jail sentence? What did you do?
Well I was Lisa M's assistant for about 8 months, during the period of time that she was the Jamz TV (which used to air on Mun2) host. As to why I did jail time, that was because I got into an accident where I was found at fault, they found me guilty for Reckless Endangerment. But that was my past and I did my time and paid my dues to society and I want people to know that I used to work with Father Albert Cutie rescuing lives from drugs and crime through a program called Youth Encounters so I hope that people don’t judge me for my past. You mean a car accident?
Yes.Oh ok. Got you. Well I don't think people will be too hard on you. Who hasn't been in at least 1 accident in their lives? So Malcri, how did you end up being called Malcriao?
Well on that chat line that I spoke to you about earlier, I was called El Maliante de Carolina and I got into an argument with a girl. We told each other off and she called me a Malcriao, which means a spoiled brat and from there on I am known as Malcraio “El Mas Controversial†because in my interviews I will ask any question that I want, regardless of how bad it is or whether the artist gets mad.
Malcriao – The Most Controversial in the Industry.Ok so now we have the name and the man behind it. How did you actually start doing interviews?
Well it was through Lisa M that I started working in 2002 with Justine Zane and C-Traffik on FIU radio 88.1fm (WRGP). The show was called The Insanity Show it was about Reggaeton and the 1st person that I interviewed was Lisa M and from then on she gave me other phone numbers where I was able to do my research and interview people that year including… Daddy Yankee, Voltio, Tempo and many othersThat's great. How did you end up winning a People's Choice Reggaeton Award for your show?
Well as you know you were given a show on an internet radio station where you basically told me :"Malcri do you want to take it over, I don’t have the time ", and of course I told you "Hell Yeah" and The Show con Malcriao was born during all this time I have been doing massive concerts and Puertorrican parades, as well as many TV shows. I got my first shot on TV with LTV on Pal Perreo Video Mix which I use to do with Dj Shotgun. From there, I got my chance and in Miami, NY, LA people already started to know who I was so when I grabbed the radio show from you I already had fans that supported me. I think that there were 4 interviews that really made the show more controversial… Arcangel, Yaviah, Alpachino and Temperamento Vs. Mc Ceja. I believe that those were what helped win the award. Now we are by Peoples Choice, the number 1 show on the internet for Reggaeton and Latin Hip Hop thanks to the people that’s why I say Thank You.Awww well you know from the moment I met you I knew that you would do big things and I am glad I was able to give you a push in the right direction. You have always been a good friend to me and I appreciate it and wish you well in everything that you do. What other things in the industry have you done that you would like people to know about?
Well I’ve been in different cities like Washington D.C., Charlotte N.C., Atlanta, GA, Birmingham, AL, Baltimore, MD, Waukegan, IL, Chicago, IL hosting many events like Don Omar concerts and I also believe that I am a good example of struggle, sometimes our parents make it hard for us but I have dedicated myself to the industry, not for the money but for the love of it and when I do an interview on my show I want the fans to know that I try to think like them. When I interview an artist I don’t put the hat of a host I put the hat of a fan that’s why my interviews are so good so right now I invite everyone to give me a try and log in to www.xclusiva.com on Tuesdays from 8pm to Midnight or Thursdays from 6-8pm and find out Latinos, Why I’m known as the most controversial show on the net today when it comes to Reggaeton and Latin HipHop. If you are wondering where I’m from I was born in New York City and was raised in Carolina, Puerto Rico. What things do you have coming up in the near future?
Well we are about to launch The Show con Malcriao TV and are looking for sponsors and also trying to launch the internet radio station Xclusiva.com Radio. I will be appearing on some well known Reggaeton artist’s cd’s and with the help of God a campaign for the clothing Reggaeton Wear which I think will be a big step.Is the clothing line "Reggaeton Wear" yours?
No it is not. The clothing line is owned by a friend of mine that I am going to help. I like the designs and clothing and am going to support them to the fullest.Oh ok. Got you. Malcriao, do you have anything to say to your fans that listen faithfully every week to your show?
All I can say to them is… Thank you and get ready because if you think last year was good this year is going to be the year and with each of your help we will get the tour going so we can meet soon. That will be awesome! Do you have any shout outs that you would like to give?
Of course to Indie Street Latino for the opportunity, John Arias, to my staff they know who they are but there is one that passed away that really need to be shouted out Angelito R.I.P and I will never forget you., my parents, Sandy La Loba, Lisa M my mentor in the music industry, Angela, Diana Lopez, Ray Gonzales from RB Entertainment, Katita from Perreo Radio, La Rubia, Ivelisse, Januel, Marimar aka Chica Salvaje and to all my friends thank you for being there for me when I need you the most, you guys are not friends you are family.Well Malcriao, again I wish you the best in everything that you do and I will always have your back.
