While inspired by the roots-rock of Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Band, the early country-rock of Gram Parsons and their latter-day disciples Wilco, as well as the Midwest alt-rock of the Replacements, Trashed On Fiction’s sound is uniquely their own. Eric, Eric, Dave and Brent take these influences in music and attitude, add a dose of literary detachment and infuse them with the passion and pop edge of the “angry young man†scene from the U.K. (Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, Wrecklesss Eric) in a way that hasn’t heard before. This band has quickly matured and expanded their sonic palette since their 2002 debut EP, which was very raw, but with pop hooks lurking beneath the gravel. The band spent a better part of two years working on this album, scrapping the initial entire record and re-recording it themselves after-hours in a music store, Brent’s kitchen, and his new home studio, which give the songs a warm, intimate, lived-in feeling while still sounding like it could have been recorded at Abbey Road. In fact, so much time was spent working on this record that Brent (a transplant from Arkansas) ended up joining the band. Given the ambitious scope of “Lawns & Gardens†(complete with a 12-minute epic called “One A Side†that will leave you gasping for air), Trashed On Fiction hopes people give them a chance.
