INFO ABOUT THE 2008 SHOW:

WHAT:
Turn Up the Volume!
is an exciting new initiative dedicated to raising awareness of the impact of sexual assault and violence against women in our community. Features area musicians, spoken word poets, coffee and a bit 'o' revolution. This is gonna be one hot show.
WHO:
Theory , beats and words out of Flint
Bakari Mikeal , spoken word poet
Traeder , featuring Carrie Treder , acoustic guitar
Ami Mattison , spoken word poet
WHEN/WHERE:
Friday, April 25, 2008. Dawn of a New Day Coffee House. 126 N. Franklin St. Saginaw. Michigan. Doors 7 pm.
WHY:
*1 in 3 women worldwide experiences domestic violence at the hands of her partner.
*1 in 4 college-age women is raped, most often by someone she knows.
*1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually assaulted during their childhood.
If you're like us, you're sick of the violence. In Saginaw, like much of the rest of the world, poor women and women of color are at an even higher risk. Sexism, racism, homophobia and other forms of oppression are all connected. Take a lesson from Martin Luther King, Jr.: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
but we have hope. we believe we have the power to change things for the better. we believe in our community and in taking a stand for what's right for ALL of us, especially for those who have no voice. that's how we roll.
Proceeds from this event will benefit Underground Railroad, Inc. , a non-profit agency in Saginaw, Michigan that provides free and confidential services to victims/survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
