Benjamin Healy is originally from St. Paul, Minnesota where he began studying piano at age five. Stemming from his interest in the ragtime music of Scott Joplin, Ben decided to study jazz piano beginning in high school. He was also playing alto saxophone in the school bands while studying privately with local artists Nate Shaw, Nicki Denner and Bill Carrothers. Ben attended the University of Minnesota in Duluth for two years, majoring in Jazz Studies. He took a year off from college to work at St. Paul's premiere jazz club, the Dakota Bar & Grill, and lead his own trio performing in Minneapolis. Working at the Dakota allowed Ben to meet and hear many jazz greats such as Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Ahmad Jamal, James Moody, Kenny Garrett, Brad Mehldau, Danilo Perez and Michael Brecker. He then transferred to the New School University Jazz & Contemporary Music Program in Manhattan. While attending the New School Ben studied privately with Mike LeDonne, Armen Donelian and Hal Galper. He played in numerous ensembles under the direction of such jazz greats as Reggie Workman, Billy Harper, Joe Chambers and Junior Mance. In 2003 Ben graduated at the top of his class with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Piano Performance.
