About Me
CHECK IT:
I am a singer/songwriter/producer/journalist/sometimes actor/standup philosopher/jackie-of-all-trades
from the Boston area. I sing r&b/hip-hop/soul with a twist of jazz, tell me can you digg it? Laughter is underrated. I love to ensnare peoples mindstates with ear lovlies. I’m like a walking box of chocolates; never know what you’re getting and I’m sweet as hell until you try to bite me in half and put me back in the box : ) I also do voice-overs, jingles and commercials. Old school hip hop, classic rock, big band and jazz make me very happy. Artists who are in love with making good ass music are my idols and one of my many sources of inspiration. Being a healthy example for REAL women is one of my many purposes.
Empowerment will set you free.
I do not need a t.v. screen or a magazine to show me what is beautiful, all I gotta do is get off my gluteus extra maximus and stand in front of the mirror for that one.
I march to the beat of my own drum.
Did I mention my drummer has ADD?
I wear my heart on my sleeve & brass knuckles on the other sleeve.
P.S. In the event that you are unaware at this point in your time here, it should probably be disclosed that I AM the cat’s meow ; )
"I MAY NOT BE THE BEST
BUT THERE IS NOBODY BETTER" ~Buddy Muse
Unique, raw and soulful would best describe Shay’s flow. To break down her self-dubbed style of "Hood-Soul" the most accurately, it would go a little something like this:R&B/HIP HOP-SOUL with a twist of JAZZ.
Growing up north of Boston, music was a constant and strong presence in Shay’s world from a very young age. Starting with her paternal grandfather Buddy Muse, a jazz musician, who performed consistently in the big band jazz circuit with Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday among others. Her maternal grandfather coincidentally named Shay, trained at the Boston Conservatory of Music as an opera singer.
Shay’s mom, who sings gospel and opera,
fronted her own rock band when Shay was just a little girl, giving shay insight early on of the power of live music and performing.
"I remember being 5 years old sitting at the top of the basement stairs with my brothers watching my mom and her band rehearse for hours every night. Every day I would sit and listen to my moms extensive record collection. I would put on the headphones and sit in the rocking chair and rock the chair across the room and flip albums over at length. Music was a constant and driving force in my life. I would do this just about every day. Kids would be outside playing and I’d be in the house bumping everything from The Beatles and Led Zepplin to Billie Holiday, James Brown, Shirley Murdock, New Edition and Van Halen
(original Van Halen shot out to David Lee Roth)"
When Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys dropped, whooaa!!
LL Cool J, U.T.F.O., M.C. Shan, Dougie Fresh,
Eric B and Rakim, Public Enemy,
MC LYTE..!!
Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, E.P.M.D., Boogie Down Productions, Just Ice, the list goes on.
Over the years her love affair with music would grow deeper, and by then she had learned to play a few instruments, but in time it was undeniable her favorite instrument was her voice. Shay began writing and producing, and performing in many R&B/Hip-Hop shows in Boston and surrounding areas. Writing, producing, recording, rocking the mic, stage and crowds has and continues to be her true love.
