The idiocy of the guitar is eternal.

About Me

MyGen Profile Generator
APOSTLES OF LIGHT are an improvising duo which forges jazz, improvised music, drone metal and real time sampling/manipulation to create sonic environments not heard since the dawn of mankind.
BOTTOMED OUT is a collaborative quartet originally formed in 2002 in Detroit, MI to explore the dynamic and textural range of a two tenor/guitar/drums format. While the influences remain diverse and nuanced, the unique sound of Bottomed Out is best described as punk-jazz an emphasis on dynamic range and intensity and a collective go-for-broke improvisational mentality. Strong elements of composition and structure still remain as all four members are talented composers in the classical, jazz, and rock vernaculars. In 2006 Bottomed Out released its debut recording Push (envoi recordings) and is currently touring the US.
JUSTHIS is a trio featuring Dan Bennett on all manner of saxophones and (at different points in history) Tim Brown (Seattle) or Nick Zielinski (Minneapolis) on drums. Mackstaller originally formed the trio to perform his work the "Tom Waits Carnival Suite" at the inaugural Detroit Composers Collective concert in 2003. Since, the trio has toured from the Midwest to the West Coast and a yet unreleased record hopes to one day see the light of day.
MEDIAN TRIO is a guitar trio featuring one of New York's most in-demand rhythm tandems, bassist Chris Lightcap and drummer Gerald Cleaver. The trio's music highlights Mackstaller's compositional side, which ranges from melodic rock to Americana jazz to noise paintings of sonic anarchy.
QUINTET is my exploration of the 'Americana' jazz guitar tradition, the human voice, and my closest attempt at a rock band since junior high school. This group is also a bridge between my roots in the Ann Arbor creative music community and my current New York ventures which include trying to get my amp rig through the turnstile.

Influences: "The history of music is mortal but the idiocy of the guitar is eternal." -Milan Kundera
Life is the greatest teacher for our art: the experiences we've had, the people we know, our joy, our pain.
My music originates from the jazz and improvised vernacular (Monk, Coltrane, Miles, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Art Ensemble of Chicago) layered with my love of hip hop, turntablism, minimalism, melodic rock, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Sonic Youth, Wilco, Stravinsky & Bartok, ambient, electronic & Brazilian music.
I like music that surprises my assumptions so I am constantly trying to surprise and challenge myself.
Sounds Like: "[He] can ably oscillate from noisy bop to thick, disorienting soul and rock at the drop of a hat." -metrotimes staff (april 23, 2002)
"When one conjures up images of heady avant jazz, pasty suburban boys rarely come to mind... but that's all about to change. Ryan Mackstaller, a cub by most standards, is way ahead of his time." -eve doster, metrotimes, detroit (july 7, 2004)
"[Nice Day for a Swim] is reminiscent of music by the contemporary rock band, Radiohead. Some may do a double-take when reading this, but Radiohead’s somber, yet heavy, style did come to mind when I first listened to the beginning tracks on Nice Day for a Swim. In addition, both bands are noted for their originality in style. Whatever my opinion is, this is an excellent album." -paul wright, jazzreview.com
