Semaphore were five, then they were four and now they are three which according to DeLaSouls seminal track is in fact the magic number. As a three piece have adopted a rougher hewn sound, equal parts intimately sparse and biblically apocalyptic. REVIEWS
-"Week two sees Irish-Italian trio Semaphore deliver some darkly psychedelic sounds to a largely appreciative audience. Singer/guitarist Louis Brennan has a rich, emotive voice and his tales of relationships gone awry come steeped in melancholy and regret" (Mike Kemp, Rock Sound, Sept 2006)
-"Semaphore have developed their take on intelligent rock around the powerhouse songwriting of Louis Brennan and if the world wants an acoustic-based variation on psychedelia it need look no further" (Hot Press magazine 7 May 2005)
-Irish-Italian trio semaphore boast great vocals from Louis Brennan and, having moved on from the acoustic psychedelia of yore, they're a heavier and attractively unpolished version of The La's. Louis does a neat Nick Cave at times, especially on the truly majestic 'Tempest'. 'Mercury' is more of the same, with linesabout having too many chemicals in the brain and other touches that should keep Westlife fans at bay. Both tracks might have gained from a little trimming, but there's a world-weariness about both songs that demands repeat listens.(Jackie Hayden,Hot press magazine 26th Jan 2006)
-"The charm of semaphore is the rattling guitar and dramatic coasting vocals they serve up with disarming proficiency" (Richard Osley, Camden New Journal 14 April 2005)
-"Atmospheric, experimental, yet comfortably compelling independent music is conjured up by a thoughtful and honest quintet, featuring a Joel Pott styled vocal introduction" (glasswerk.co.uk)
-"If talent has anything to do with it these guys are on the cusp of something big (a.m.p.)
-"A powerful psychedelic acoustic sound supported by enchanting lyrics. A must see live" (KARMADOWNLOAD)
-"For those who like chilling out to imaginative music that is jam packed with lots of emotion then please pay attention while I tell you about a band that offers all of that and a guitar or two" (TARANIS)
-"Tempest/Mercury is a crafted single, indicating that the signs are pointing to a promising future for this sharp outfit" (angryape.com)
-"Semaphore's sound seeps mixes of Then Jerico, Divine Comedy, Morrissey and My Morning Jacket. The CD seems to create a bit of an insecure feeling that reaches into your emotions and shakes them around, which we all need from time to time" (gigs-unlimited)
-"This 5 track EP is a welcome introduction to the brooding world of Semaphore. They capture the halfway house between gloom and light with compositions including Morphine, flying the Radiohead style bedroom angst flag, and Fifteen Conversations at the sunnier end of the spectrum. The latter has shades of San Francisco in the late 60s and each sung with moody soul. The epic seven and a half minutes of Atomic Blue is a beautiful Nick Drake like moment - fading out and in with the speaking clock (nice touch), lazy congas, and trance like hums. Semaphores natural melancholic leanings are never overstated with 5 songs that grow in subtlety and depth." (music-news.com)
-"There is an undeniable whiff of songwriting substance here" (gigwise.com)
-"Semaphore sang depressing songs about girls and life's misgivings while still managing to shake their hips a little. Their pretty acoustic numbers were a pleasant contrast to their deep electrics and wisely placed pauses excelled their performance. Their songs were drawn out but maintained a good sense of atmosphere" (live review from ishotthedeputy.com)
