The Unknown Quantity

About Me

"unknown quantity: 1. a factor in a given situation whose bearing and importance is not apparent. 2. a variable whose values are solutions of an equation." 3. "the best band you'd never heard of..."The Unknown Quantity is about volume, not just in terms of sound but also in terms of general creative ideas and people involved, some have been regular contributors, some just passing by on their way somewhere else. The driving force behind The Unknown Quantity is a need to release feelings, thoughts, dreams and desires; some unfulfilled, some consummated, burnt out... The Unknown Quantity has explored a wide range of art forms, the main focus becoming music: the 'Ursprache', the mother-tongue proto-language... The universal language so many people hear, but so few speak. Some food for thought, as a reaction against an endless supply of mediocre bubblegum, popcorn & candyfloss, churned out by over-exposed inflated egos... Otherwise for some truly diverse styles, as well some sonic beauty, do investigate some of our carefully selected "friends"!

The creative core of The Unknown Quantity was Simon (singer/songwriter) & Yves (guitarist extraordinaire) who started the band.To tell the story of the past, present and future...2009, and the current incarnation of 'The phenomenon that is known as: Unknown Quantity, the best band you'd never heard of...TM' is joined by the brilliant Daisuke on guitars with a rainbow of styles (also a guitarist for Lex Lucian and Day One, who's also played with Hugh in these and other bands). Rising from the ashes again The Unknown Quantity is recording an incredible follow up to 2008's epic EP 'Mourning the Moment', with the masterful mind of Terry, who plays bass in Grim Hilde, taking on the production duties.Hopefully Hugh will be re-appearing on this recording, this time on percussion and drums, via the wonders of modern technology all the way from Sydney.Currently Simon, Yves & Daisuke are playing live sets as a three-piece around London and hope to play some other cities soon...2008, Hugh (multi-instrumentalist in many projects, including a few of his own) produced and played on 'Mourning the Moment', playing bass live, as well as guitars in sporadic rehearsals with the help of the beautiful and multi-talented arstists Stefanie on bass and Valentina on bass/drums.Yves & Simon also played with Gianluca and played some of his songs in Pupazzo Pazzo. Gianluca will be releasing his English versions of Mad Puppet soon!2007 the latest treatment of 'Someone...' was produced by Martin, keyboards in Alphaville, bassist/producer for The Decoders, and producer of many other artists.Yves & Simon recorded several acoustic tracks, including an acoustic version of 'Someone...' (which can be heard at www.myspace.com/thebestbandyouneverheardof) in 2006 produced by Rodney, the guy with the golden voice at Groovespot Studios. In summer 2006 and 2007 The Unknown Quantity recorded several tracks with Nick (AKA the Knox) on the box and trumpet, Yves & Richard on guitars. These recordings are rare and mystical, as we've only heard the ones from 2006 and our memories of 2007 are very blurry...2005-2007 Yves and Simon regularly played live with Robert (of The Robert James Gang) and Knox on percussion, and Pete, Pascal & Richard on guitars. Some of these moments (featuring Simon, Yves, Richard, Rob & Knox) were recorded in December 2006 and February 2007 (also known as "Yves's 'last' gig ever" he was virtually replaced by Steve but came back...) live at Edward's in Hammersmith by Ollie, guitarist in Total Movement. In 2005 Gennaro, a versatile guitarist with a huge range of experience in different styles had joined, giving a whole new take on the future of this band. But then one day he disappeared... We were actually quite worried about him, but fortunately 'they' didn't catch him, and he is still alive! We smoked, drank and jammed again in 2009...In 2004 The Unknown Quantity, consisting of Yves, Simon & Jerome were produced by Arno (singer/songwriter in Plastotype), recording 'Together' and 'More or Less' (which can be heard at www.myspace.com/thebestbandyouneverheardof) as well as several other songs (inluding 12 with just Simon & Yves)at The Rockhouse and 'Scream Studios'. Initial members joining Simon & Yves, were Jerome (now beating skins for JFK/Faith Of The Few) on drums, Eddy (now thundering in Phantomatics) on bass, and brilliantly but briefly Markus (singer/songwriter in Android Love Caravan) on rythm guitar, who rejoined us for 2 shows in 2005 & 2006. Eddy recorded some foetal versions of our songs in summer 2004 when we were called 'Scars'. Due to squillions of reasons, time, space, money (total lack of), obssessions, alcohol etc... this first incarnation of the band self-combusted. Otherwise Simon has also sung with Scarab, Scabs, Scars, Blitzer (shame they weren't called Blister!!), and The Thorns. Yves has played with Idalia, Deforrest, 3 Years Down, and Caligula.Of course we are always interested in expanding our sound, so any musicians (preferrably maestros, of piano, cello, violin, trumpet etc...) interested in PLAYing FOR US get in contact, so we might remain an unknown quantity...
