DARK PASSION PLAY (NUCLEAR BLAST)
Called dead by a lot of people (after splitting with Tarja) Nightwish prove to be tonic and motivated, hitting the market whith the long awaited "Dark Passion Play". Will they succeed in repeating "Once" success and equal the intensity immortalized on "The End Of An Era" DVD? Time will be a gentleman: in the meanwhile let's have a look at the Finn band's new record, strengten by the junction with Swedish singer Anette. Starting from her, it's clear her style is completely different from Tarja's: good extension, highly delicate while changing tones and timbre close to Anneke or Sharon, just to make things clear. It all starts in an unusual way with "The Poet And The Pendulum", a fifteen-minute track is not a good choice to open a record: pompous orchestrations and sudden accelerations show a cross-section of Nightwish not far away from the older CDs. "Bye Bye Beautiful" is dedicated to Tarja: it's a bitter-sweet fragment, 'cos its his pop-oriented, light rhythm (somehow recalling Abba) could lead to think about thoughtless lyrics. Instead it's bitterness (for a "Distant" person) the main theme of the song! "Amaranth" has already been heard in a thousand ways, a fantasy, easy listening track, which sums up with the sleep-inducing atmosphere of the other single "Eva", maybe the one false step of the Finnics. You can breathe a mystical and spiritual air in "The Islander", with a stunning Marco Hietala on vocals, and in the instrumental "Last Of The Wilds" where, for a moment, it's like listening to The Corrs! "Whoever Brings The Night" is made of different stuff, athletic, permeated of an aggressive rhythm, supported by the omnipresent Tuomas' keyboards, and "Master Passion Greed" with it's unprecedented power, almost speed-metal! Other potential singles are "Cadence Of Her Last Breath", "Sahara" and "For The Heart I Once Had", comparable to the last work of After Forever and Within Temptation especially. Concluding, their choice to play safe is comprehensible, putting an album loyal to the band's outlines, but some new idea to be developed in the future can be foreseen. Anette's voice could be better integrated within the style of the band, because it's evident she found herself singing songs not written for her timbre. This full-length gives pleasant moments, fresh, tasty and melodic tracks. Successful, but let's wait the next album to get some definite conclusions!
