***I posted this as a blog in February, and it has disappeared into the land of wherever old blogs go, so I'll put it here for now*** Ok, Some time ago it was requested that I identify my top 10-ish albums. After a lot of thought, ok, not that much thought, I have formulated a list. The problem is this list was probably different last week, and will probably be different next week. I noticed that I have listened to a lot of these albums very recently, I don't know if I listened to them because they are my favorites, or if they're on my mind because I just listened to them. In no particular order.Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds - I've said this might be my favorite album ever for a while now. Guns N' Roses rythm guitar player, and excellent songwriter makes incredible Stones-esce rock n roll record. There's a cover of a raggae song done like a punk song, Ron Wood sings a duet, and Come On Now Inside may be the best ballad ever./Guns N' Roses, Appetite For Destruction- Since I was on the GNR subject, pretty much every song on this album was my favorite song at one point in my life. A fairly cliqued choice, but a correct one./Aerosmith, Rocks - I might choose one of about 4 or 5 Aerosmith albums to be on this list at any time, but this album is great. If Walk This Way was on this record instead of on Toys In The Attic, Rocks would be talked about the same way Appetite For Destruction is, but it didn't have a huge hit, just a few minor ones. I don't need the hit, but a lot of people do./Tom Waits, Small Change - Basically a Jazz record. Only piano, drums, bass, and saxaphone. I don't own many records with no guitar on them, but this one is incredible. The Piano Has Been Drinking makes me want to laugh and cry all at once. Waits got alot more avant garde in his later work, which is great too, but the simplicity and beauty here can't be beat. NOTE- I could also put the newer, more avant Waits album Mule Variations on this list but at the moment it's Small Change, as I said, it could change next week./Blind Melon - A lot of people just know this as "that Bee Girl band" and yeah, that song's on here, but this album is rockin, bluesy, and folky all at once. With just enough strange musicianship to keep you guessing./Robert Randolph And The Family Band, Unclassified - I like this for a lot of the same reasons I like the Blind Melon album. It's Rock, blues, funk, and soul all at once. Most of the guitar is pedal steel, and I'm all for taking "normal" musical style and changing it up a little./Willie Nelson, Red Headed Stranger - You can't go wrong with Willie, and in my experience this is the best. A little odd with reprises and things like that. I think the concept album came before the movie, but I'm not sure and it doesn't matter. "you can't blame a man, for killing a woman who's trying to steal his horse"/Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness- A double album that I kind of forget how great it is until I am listening to it. Covers about every kind of emotional and instrumental experimentation that a grunge band can do, and still be just a grunge band, not have to be classified as something different.(although I don't know if they consider themselves grunge)/Blind Boys of Alabama, Higher Ground - My only purchase ever from the Gospel section of the record store. These guys are literally blind men in their sixties who've been making music together for about 50 years, but they have more passion for what they're doing than most young people. Whether it's because they think they're doing God's work or that they just have been doing something they love since they were kids I don't know, and I don't care. I'm not a religious guy, but I'll buy more Blind Boys. It also helps that Robert Randolph and the Family Band are the backup band for this album, and Ben Harper who I also dig the hell out of, but none of his stuff made this list makes a couple guest appearances./And 10th I would have to declare a tie betweenRolling Stones-Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main St. I need some Stones on this list, and which of those is my favorite varies day to day./Kings X, Dogman- Excellent musicianship, songwriting, and groove all at once. Groove is what's most important to me in all my music though./Faith No More, Angeldust-The guitar player for bitched about there not being enough guitar on this album, that might be what I like, nothing else I liked when this came out had much except guitar solos./Zakk Wylde, Book Ok Shadows- Acoustic record by a heavy metal guy, that as good as Black Label Society is, makes me wish he was amish so he would never encounter electricity again------------------------------------------------------- -------I'm going to look at this list tomorrow and be irritated that I didn't include something, that's the way this stuff works for me. Which is why I hesitated so long to make it. So this will do for now

I jut finished re-reading The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, which is my favorite book. I was also recently flipping through The Daily Show Presents: America, and tittering like an idiot. For some time now I have been reading random chapters of The Frank Zappa Book, instead of front to back like you're supposed to.
