About Me
As it says on the DPM site:Who are we? The story begins...Dad's Porno Mag.Good name...but are they any good? Better believe it. A bio filled with self-indulgent name dropping and back slapping? Hope so...Act ..1: Back in '94, right when post grunge pop punk was just starting to get on everyone's nerves, these Californians set out to combine the three key elements of what they felt had formed their musical backgrounds, and in a sense, formed the attitude of rock n' roll (a long since forgotten word, and a longer since forgotten spirit!) The first thing to do was to strike up a common factor that bonded the
band members as well as their fans together... hence the name, Dad's Porno Mag (DPM to friends and charity organizers). The name describes in three words what it was like growing up in the late 70's (and probably decades before and after), growing up in the suburbs (we're all from the suburbs!), and searching and discovering your sexuality for the first time. The more they asked around, the more their friends and fans admitted to their own discovery of Dad's Porno Mag. So they had a name...Act ..2: Songs, songs, songs. Blah, blah, blah. Realizing early on that good songs would be the only thing that could give the band true staying power, they wrote a ton. With a name like Dad's Porno Mag, who would take them seriously? Their response: "Don't take us seriously. Write some novelty songs ('Smell My Finger'), write some heavy pop songs ('Rule Me'), write some ballads ('V'), write whatever songs you feel; just make them good! At the end of the day, no one can deny the power of a great song." One needs to look no further then to songs like 'Pigeons are Rude' , 'The Ballad of
Sandra Bullock', and 'Poster Idol' to admit that these guys are well rooted in the art of penning Rock n' Roll pop classics.Act ..3: The dream of The Big Rock Show. With the days of self-lamenting shoe gazers drawing to a close, DPM figured what rock music needed was a return to what had made it such a great force to begin with: fantastic unattainability! The mere perception of being rock stars that were adored by throngs of fans who actually looked up to their heroes was enough to make it a reality. Big lights, big production, big sound, everything big! (Except big hair.) The larger-than-life stage show is what Dad's Porno Mag was shooting for. Who cares if it was a couple of Radio Shack strobe-lights, lava lamps, and handmade props that cluttered up the stage? Everyone starts somewhere, and DPM quickly became known for performing their well-crafted pop gems in a loud and entertatining enviornment. In a world of the 15-second (no longer 15-minute) attention span, The Mag understood how important holding the crowd's interest was; and that meant using any entertainment means necessary.Act ..4: Who's who and countless name droppings... The bands powerful rhythm section consists of Stefan Adika on bass and Mike Fasano on drums.Stefan's melodic bass lines (a la McCartney-esque) and pristine backing harmonies complement the relentless bash and pop of Mike's drumming. Stefan has been earning his share touring the world with former G n' R gunner Gilby Clarke. Touring with Gilby has shown him the ropes and the highs and lows of what it takes to survive in the world of rock. He also did time as the bassist for L.A. Guns. In an ironic twist, Stefan is not only the current bass player for DPM, he's the original one! After several successful years in DPM, bassist Will Effertz left to pursue other interests, and Stefan was called back to reclaim his bassist slot!Mike Fasano has also spent some days in the trenches of Rock n' Roll. He even destroyed a cruise ship ballroom while on tour playing the Love Boat circuit. Mike is the connections man. From Green Day to Fleetwood Mac, there aren't many huge bands Mike hasn't been helping out in the studios for the past few years.Keri Kelli has definitely paid his musical dues as well, having made a name for himself in the L.A. scene during the days when glam was king and two-toned hair was cool... obviously, Keri still holds tightly to some aspects of his glam roots (literally!) From his highly successful years with Big Bang Babies to his stint with Pretty Boy Floyd, to his recent position in the lineup of Ratt, Keri proves that rock and roll has never lost its fun... an attitude that meshes perfectly with that of his DPM bandmates.Guitarist/singer Ryan Roxie wraps up the line-up as the charismatic, enthusiastic frontman with the big and bright sparkle guitar. His favorite vocalist is Robin Zander, and even though his voice sounds nothing like that of his idol, Cheap Trick comparisons are inevitable. While known well by fans for his days with Candy, Electric Angels, and Gilby Clarke, Roxie has also gained notoriety playing guitar for another one of his idols, Alice Cooper, on several worldwide tours."Getting the Alice Cooper gig has hopefully paved the way for a lot of good things to happen for Dad's Porno Mag," says Roxie. "Not only did playing with one of my musical influences teach me things about combining great stage production with great songs, Alice has taught me how to go through all of it with a smile on my face."Epilogue: So there it is, all the ingredients needed to cook up one huge Rock n' Roll crack ball with promising years of success to come. No amount of street buzz or over-hyped journalism can substitute for a great record. So listen to Dad's Porno Mag's self-titled debut disc brilliantly produced by Jim Mitchell (Ugly Kid Joe, Poe) and Mark Schulman (Simple Minds) with additional production by Alex Woltman and Gilby Clarke, and become a DPM believer yourself. Call them "America's Band", call them "The Other White Meat", call them what you will. But be aware that Dad's Porno Mag have arrived and are giving a much needed kick into the world of rock!-------------------------------------------------------
