***SPECIAL NOTICE!*** This MySpace page is only here because... well, because it's still here. I NEVER use MySpace. Please e-mail - I WILL NOT get your MySpace message!
Thanks, you rule.
I'm a cartoonist living and working in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, living my childhood dream. I've wanted to be a cartoonist since I was 8, and have been working towards it ever since. It's like the normal kid's equivalent to becoming an astronaut or something.
I was born in San Jose, California and raised in Ijamsville, MD, but West Virginia has truly become my home. I LOVE traveling. I live for long road trips and plane rides. Airports never cease to get my heart pumping. While I've enjoyed every trip to Europe, I adore discovering North America.
I'm big on camping, hiking, and walking, but rarely get to do the first two. I spend a lot of time walking around in my little town.
I graduated Shepherd College with a BFA in photography, but photography has been downgraded to a hobby (weddings sucked all the fun out of the profession). When I'm not working, I'm probably sewing something, attempting to get back into painting, trying to keep my plants from dying (so far, so good), or cooking. I have Celiac Disease (gluten intolerance), so I'm on the wheat-, barley-, and rye-free diet.
I'll never turn down a bottle Woodchuck Cider or Honest Tea. Despite what you'd probably think after reading my comics, I'm actually not a complete and total lush, but I love my bar unconditionally. I'll drink just about anything that's pink. Sex on the Beach is my fave.
What else? I tend to be either really shy or really damn talkative (could you tell?). I have the memory of a goldfish. I also HAVE a goldfish. Her name is Goldie. She's enormous and will never die. I've recently invited two kittens named Smudge and Ellie to live with me. In February we're moving into a great big house with a great big yard.
I aspire to write films one day, though in the short-term, I just aspire to write. I'm finally working on my first graphic novel, though the research is taking longer than expected. I have to learn how to play violin and become a candy-striper at a hospital first.
There's a lot of indie in my life. Indie films, indie rock, indie comics. I'm picky about films, but when it comes to music, I just like anything original with a pulse. I listen to everything from classic and indie rock to industrial and bluegrass.
I'm pretty easy to figure out & I'm an awful liar. Also, yes, I talk this much in person. I love writing about myself. Surveys make me smile. My New Year's resolution for 2008 is to "do everything with love." It's a lot harder than it sounds.
If you'd like to see more of what I do, visit the Girls With Slingshots website or my under-construction portfolio site .
PS. RIP, Weekly World News! Yes, it's true, the world's most reliable news source has gone kaput. I used to draw The New Adventures of Bat Boy for this rag; look for compilations later this year!
(Props to nUCLEArcENTURy.COM for making my page not suck.)

My Interests

Road trips, photographing with crappy cameras, sewing without a pattern, feeding my goldfish (yeah). Listening to the birds in the morning and the train at night. Walking to the store and hitting the farmers market on Sundays. Falling asleep in a blanket of kittens.
Airports. Taking off in a plane. Roller coasters. Driving fast over wavy hills. Just driving fast. Bumming a ride on the back of a friend's motorcycle.
Taking mini-vacations. Meeting my family for dinner. Surprise visitors. Surprise parties. Umm, surprises.
Spending all day outdoors. Being genuinely romantic and just barely avoiding "cheesy." Taking the train. Swimming in the Potomac.
Volunteering. Making a stranger smile. Giving people the benefit of the doubt. Turning off the TV. Listening. Loving.

I'd like to meet:

People who read Girls With Slingshots . Other artists. Musicians. Designers. Old classmates and neighbors. People I haven't talked to in years. Sophia Coppola, Zach Braff and Craig Thompson , so I can thank them for inspiring me to death. Andrew Wyeth (I hope he's still alive). Diablo Cody. Paul Taylor one of these days, I'm sure.
I do NOT want to "friend" or chat with you if your MO is to date and/or "hump" me, so don't waste your keystrokes. I'm not combing the Internet for a boyfriend. Fair warning, "SINGLE" in my mind means "NOT MARRIED." I'm likely to have a boyfriend. In fact, just assume I'm taken.
Oh, one more warning: I WILL IMMEDIATELY REMOVE any comments larger than, say, 300x375, or any videos/music. You are very sweet to want to share your wallpaper-sized advertisement for your own benefit, or your hilarious video of someone eating poo, but really, I just couldn't accept something that extravagant.

Music:

Anything that's got soul.
My radio's preset is 89.7 WSHC, Shepherd's student-run station. It's on all the time.
A short list of faves: Mates of State, Journey (hush!), Zero 7, Iron & Wine, Led Zeppelin, Beck, Cat Power, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers, Spacehog, Elliot Smith, Jeff Buckley, Ani DiFranco, B52's, Aimee Mann, The Shins, DJ Shadow, Sloan, Luna, Nick Drake, Ella Fitzgerald, Death Cab for Cutie, Imogen Heap. And everything else.

Movies:

Ghostbusters, Lost in Translation, Garden State, Children of Men, Little Chilren, The Fifth Element, Pumpkin, Broken Flowers, Shop Girl, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Trading Places, just about anything by Focus, Kev Smith flicks, comedies in general. I love my 80's comedies!

Television:

I haven't had cable in 8 years. When I'm within reach of a TV, I'm addicted to Myth Busters. I love Cartoon Network, History & Discovery Channels. I'm amazed by Avatar and Kim Possible. Adam's gotten me hooked on Top Chef and Project Runway, god dammit.

Books:

I just read a "real book" for the first time since I was a kid. Embarrassing, but I'm the slowest reader you've ever met. The book was Jaws and it was AWESOME.
I later read Youth in Revolt and Breakfast at Tiffanies, both of which were also AWESOME.

  • Alias (Bendis/Gaydos)
  • Blankets (Craig Thompson)
  • Y the Last Man (Vaughn)

I'm by no means religious, but I try to live my life according to "What Would Jesus/Buddha Do," so... Jesus and Buddha.
Also my mom, who will accept and follow through with every single volunteer job she's offered. She was practically born to be a mom. She's a rather amazing woman.
