Riverkeeper protects the Hudson River from pollution and harmful development projects; safeguards New York City’s drinking water; and leads the battle to close the Indian Point nuclear power plant. To accomplish our work, we rely on our own investigators and lawyers, and enlist the help of experts in law, engineering, biology, hydrology, economics and energy policy. We also depend on our Boat Captain John Lipscomb and Citizen Watchdogs, our eyes and ears on the River, and the Pace Environmental Litigation Clinic whose law students assist on Riverkeeper cases.
Objective
Riverkeeper is committed to empowering activists and citizens to defend the Hudson River, the New York City Watershed, and the environment of their own communities.
History
Riverkeeper began as the Hudson River Fishermen’s Association (HRFA), an environmental watchdog organization founded by a group of concerned fisherman in 1966 under the leadership of Bob Boyle. In 1983 the HRFA launched a patrol boat, hiring John Cronin as the first full-time Hudson Riverkeeper. The HRFA officially changed its name to Riverkeeper in 1986.
People who care about the Hudson River and want to protect it from polluters and sprawl. People who appreciate the Hudson River and enjoy fishing, boating, and swimming in it, or simply being in its presence. People who believe in the work Riverkeeper does and want to support us.
