The Morris Brothers

Our Grass Is Blue

About Me

The Morris Brothers have been playing bluegrass and bluegrass musict for over 30 years. Mike and Matt Morris were raised up in the Elk River area of West Virginia. Mike is the older of the two brothers and his interest for playing the banjo came about when he was nine years old. Mike and Matt's mother Mary Morris bought Mike a four string banjo when the boys were inspired by Bill and Paul and the Mountain Bluegrass Boys. Eventually Mike got a five string banjo and Matt took the four string banjo until Matt got his first guitar. The Morris Brothers are self taught artists that play a format of Bluegrass music that's touched with lots of influences but still original. They moved to Aynor/Cool Springs area in SC and have lived here about 24 years now. They have the sibling harmony and outstanding instrument skill. The Morris Brothers were named Commadores of the State of West Virginia by Secatary of State A. James Mansion in 1976. During their career they have opend up for bands such as Mountain Heart, Reno Brothers, Larry Stevens and Rhonda Vincent. They have been in the lineup with the likes of IIIrd Tyme Out, Charlie Waller and The Country Gentlemen, Kenny and Amanda Smith and Grasstowne. They also opened up for Grandpa Jones and played a reception for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They have been entertaining audiences for over 30 years. The Morris Brothers have also been playing churches for over 30 years. Combining hard driving traditional bluegrass combined with the unique harmonies characteristic of brother duos, their music is a pleasure to see and hear. Their mother Mary Morris is present at most of their shows. Mary Morris is very proud of her boys and it's very obvious that they love their mother.
Mike Morris: Banjo/Vocals
Mike Morris on banjo plays a self taught combination of Scruggs and Don Reno styles developed over the years. Mike started playing the banjo when he was 9 years old. Mike placed 3rd in the Renofest State Championship Banjo Contest in March of 2003. Renofest is held each year in Hartsville SC in honor of SC native and bluegrass legend Don Reno - a master singer, songwriter and instrumentalist on guitar and banjo. Renofest is home to SC's only State Championship Band, Guitar and Banjo Contest. Mike says that they play for the love for the music and not for money or competition. Mike loves the Lord and he is a Christian. Mike stays in Aynor SC with his wife and children.
Matt Morris: Guitar/Vocals
Matt Morris plays guitar and sings vocals for the group. Matt started playing the banjo by ear shortly after Mike and then other instruments followed. Matt is a strong rhythm guitarist and flat picker. Matt & Mike have always put things together musically and really enjoyed thier lives as brothers. God kept them together with the music and playing. Those blessings will always be evident in their music. That enjoyment is very obvious on stage with Matt. Matt also plays the piano, mandolin and fiddle. Matt loves the Lord and he is a Christian. Matt stays in Cool Springs SC with his wife and children.
Tammy Holt: Bass
Tammy joined the Morris Brothers back in October of 2007. Tammy enjoys playing bass with the Morris Brothers. Her solid bass beat provides a strong backing for Mike & Matt's performances. Tammy has been playing bluegrass music for 4 years. Tammy's biggest musical influence was Mr. Otto Cook. Mr. Otto Cook passed away in July of 2006. Tammy is a Christian and truly enjoys gospel music. Tammy stays in Conway SC with her husband and children.
