I am here for Friends

About Me

I was born in a tin shack in a swamp on the banks of the Kishwaukee River in Northern Illinois. That would have been some time after WWII, I don't exactly remember when. After about 12 years, the folks had myself and three other kids and couldn't catch enough muskrats and beavers to feed us all so, being the oldest male, I was forced out of the nest. I hopped a freight, it was when John Kennedy was running fer President, and found myself in Green Bay, Wisconsin where I found work as a swamper on an ocean-going cargo ship. We shipped out right away and soon I found myself in Brisbane, Australia, where I contemplated my next move a tad too long . . . . the ship sailed off without me! I slept in alleys for only a week before I found work in a little pub, cleaning up after closing time. Finally! A Roof over my sorry head! I was paid a dollar a day with room and board so I was happy! I fell in lust with a young barmaid which, of course, got her Pa after me. He meant to kill me so I lit out and hid on the docks until I found more swamper work and soon shipped out to Los Angeles, USA. That town was way too big for a poor country boy so I thumbed a ride East and reached Phoenix, in Arizona, a Desert town, not yet too big. From Phoenix I called back home and the Sheriff told me that my folks had lit out for Arizona a few months after I had left, figgerin' that, if there weren't no muskrat, there might be some stray cats in a city. They were already in Phoenix! I soon rejoined my Family. Pa had found real work and they had bought a house on the edge of a cotton field West of town. I finished my schoolin' finally, after a year on the high seas, and took to bein' a Desert Rat. After my schoolin' were all done, I hired on with the Arizona Highway Department. I stayed on that job, travelin' all over the Great Southwest, for 30 years, retired 9 years ago and moved to Southeast Arizona and been here ever since, in my little cotton farmin' town on the Banks of the Gila River.
