Johnny Monaco
Overrated
The Wrong Crowd
Power pop veteran shows more songwriting class
On this new solo album Enuff Z'nuff's Johnny Monaco comes across as a delightfully heavied-up Squeeze. He probably couldn't write a non-catchy song if he tried, and very catchiest of the catchy here include the Ash-meets-Costello kitchen-sink drama I'll Take You As You Are, and Let's Set Our Hearts @ Self-Destruct has the kind of rhapsodic elaboration of early solo Paul McCartney (a good thing, honestly). In short, this is straight-ahead angsty, hook-filled, Anglo-centric pop. Robbie Williams could do worse than beg Monaco for a few songs like these.

Overrated
(The Wrong Crowd)
This third full length CD release from the Enuff Z'nuff's singer/guitarist is an absolute joy to listen to from start to finish. Crammed full of more hooks than a fisherman's tackle box and with angst-ridden but sometimes very amusing lyrics (check out 'The Model Of A Woman'), Johnny has obviously put a huge amount of time and effort into his latest project. The songs are extremely well crafted and leave you humming the melodies for hours afterwards. The music is sing/song, catchy power pop together with a strong flavor of late seventies new wave punk, and his vocal style, a sort of heavy metal Elvis Costello, suits it well. The styles range from the full-on punkiness of 'Television Love', 'Overrated' and 'Let's Set Our Hearts @ Self-Destruct' to the more laid back and emotional 'Still Haven't Called' and 'Fatal Problem', along with the acoustic-Beatlesy-ness of 'I Like You More'. A truly superb album, well worth checking out and definitely worthy of wide-spread recognition and major success. It would be a crime if a talent like this was to go unnoticed. If this was put out on a major label and got tons of airplay it would be absolutely huge - and rightly so.

Johnny Monaco "Overrated"
Johnny Monaco crams 13 high-octane, radio-friendly pop punk tracks into Overrated. The chunky riffs and driving rhythms recall lightweight contemporary outfits like Cartel, while the harder-rocking numbers ("Television Love, " "Long Way Down") veer closer to classic punk rock. "I'll Take You As You Are" is a shiny, slick number with a soaring, shout-along chorus, and "Still Haven't Called" treads perilously around rock ballady territory. Monaco played every instrument, recorded, mixed, and engineered the entire album, and the polished, finished product is a testament to his technical and creative talents.

Johnny Monaco
"Overrated" is 14 well penned power pop tunes with emphasis on hooks. Johnny Monaco plays everything on the record and if you had to label this solo project, Butch Walker might be the best comparison. The songs are multi layered and contain big vocal harmonies just like The Beatles and Cheap Trick - just listen to The model of a Woman. Speaking of The Beatles; I like you more is a well perfected Beatles clone. The groovy McCartney-like bass line and infectious melody line makes it my personal favorite. Even though most of the album is wrapped up in a contemporary sound On a Shelf has a vintage sound. Monaco is inspired by the good old days where song writing was the most important ingredient for making an album. Another highlight is Still Haven't Called, which sound a bit like what Monaco does for day job in Enuff Z..Nuff "Overrated" is a great album because song writing is in focus; "Overrated" is about the songs. A playing time of 47 minutes with modern sounding power pop/rock proves what Enuff Z..Nuff fans have known for 10 years - this guy is talented.â€

Johnny Monaco "Overrated"
Enuff Z'nuff vocalist/guitarist Johnny Monaco's new solo album has emerged. "Overrated" should really be titled "overlooked" because Johnny obviously is an unsung rock hero that continues the Enuff Z'nuff tradition of buzzing guitar riffs and bouncy melody that Joey Ramone would be proud of. The Cheap Trick vibe is there too, especially on "I'll take you as you are," and I dare you not to repeat "drink at the bar" from the chorus! Really strong guitar work just permeates every track here, almost to the point where the vocals get drowned a bit. "The Model of a Woman" is the best track in my opinion, it's got a head bangin' groove that doesn't quit. For Enuff Z'nuff fans this is an essential "must-have" CD for your collection. There is still enough good music here even for non-fans. The album tones down with "Fatal Problem," and here is where Johnny's mid-tempo chops are given center stage. The album could have used a few more of these tracks to balance it. On the other hand, the hard-rockin' tracks are so good you may not notice. Listen to some tracks on myspace and get this album directly from Johnny at his website.
