The Ludvico Treatment began in 2002 as a transatlantic collaboration between Adam Veenendaal (based in Vancouver, Canada) and Alex Kennard (based in Devon, England.) The two reconvened in Calgary, Canada where they begun working on the basis for the debut album Romanticism.
The music on Romanticism takes cues from the early ’90s 'shoegaze' movement, featuring a blend of swirling guitars and reverb-tinged vocals. The lyrics borrow imagery from classical Greek tragedies and Romantic-era poets. Reviewer Kaini Industries says: "...Romanticism doesn’t just stay in one place like most ripoff shoegaze bands do. It explores the nooks and crannies of the genre better than any other shoegaze album I have ever encountered, and I have encountered many. " Read the full review here.
Half of Romanticism was recorded in 2005 to be released as an EP titled Symposium featuring Alex on vocals. After an amicable split, Adam took on Ludvico as a solo endeavor back in Vancouver and opted to mix, master and produce the debut album himself.
Fellow musicians were assembled for live performances in the Vancouver area and future touring. The live band made its debut in April 2007 with the CD release of Romanticism following shortly thereafter. The band performed regularly throughout 2007-2008 and are currently rehearsing with a new drummer for upcoming gigs and touring for the rest of 2008.
Back in the studio, work on the follow up album Politeia is currently underway and should be completed within the next few months.
