Passout supplying your aching hunger for punk/soul/garage/hardcore. Williamsburg Brooklyn. 131 Grand Street
Family Business is a collective of diverse, unsigned NYC bands distributed through Ace Fu Records , the label who brought you Pinback, Ted Leo, Ex Models, Oneida, Secret Machines, and now Man Man, An Alabtross, Acid Mothers Temple, Tunng, Devotchka, Michael Leviton, and Annuals.
Fam Business introduce the BEST of NY's underground, soon to be known ALL. The Family include...
Abigail Warchild - "Abigail Warchild may not be a “Brooklyn Band†just yet since they’ve only recently relocated from Boston, but what they lack in geographic credentials they make up for with a deep and steady rock sound that exhales soul on every beat. They ain’t jangly, angular, swirling, or any other adjectives that so easily describe a large crop of the bands circulating around the city today. Most refreshingly, they don’t appear to be ironic at all." -The Deli Magazine
Elizabeth Harper and The Matinee - "she's been called 'The Female Morrissey', has a truly gorgeous voice, a way with words that would make Mozzer proud, and a gift for guitar-laden melody that would have Johnny Marr clutching his hair in rapture. Elizabeth is effortlessly stylish, with the attitude of PJ Harvey and the look of a young Chrissie Hynde. Her voice soars with the majesty and early elegance of those early Sundays records.
"Harper has an enticing voice, great melodies, and solid songwriting with the occasional arty-quirky bits. By herself her stuff's a tad melancholy and delicate a la Chan Marshall or Elliott Smith, with her band the pop is more bubbly with a slight spice of 80's Brit-pop (the Cure, the Smiths) thrown in."
Village Voice
Hull - Submerged in cosmis soundscapes, Hull challenges the mind with flowing, off-time fugues and powerful dynamic movements. Brace yourlself for an onslaught of eruptive force. Marvel at creation and destruction as
mountains move, pillars collapse, and a new world of music is formed in the deafening clap of thunder that is HULL!!!! Fair warning: They make "heavy" bands sound like Cat Power, and they have a reputation for blowing the power out at venues not worthy of their thunder-clap. See them now, bring earplugs. Hull was born in the wake of the fire...and they still burn...
"When I would have had the chance to sign Reservoir, I would have
done that too, but now that they are on "indefinite hiatus" and members have
chosen to focus on Hull, I'd definitely pick the latter up. All the crush
of early Mastodon met with the ambient fire of Neurosis, but somehow avoids
sounding like either one of them, hell yeah. Whoever ends up with these
guys (and it'll be someone very soon, I'm sure) is going to be extremely
lucky. And you know, it'd be me...if I had a record label and any balls
whatsoever." - Metal Maniacs
HULL...
What do they sound like?...Somewhere between the somnambulant art metal of NEUROSIS, the clattering, abrasive prog of MASTODON and the raging doom rock of HIGH ON FIRE, Brooklyn miscreants HULL lurk with malicious intent, churning out riffs of
incalculable hugeness while juggling fistfuls of jarring tempo shifts. They're a balls-out rock'n'roll band with a finely-honed left field sensibilities.
The story so far?...New York has long been a reliable source for thrilling new music, but it's
not the first place you think of when it comes to the kind of monumental,
bastardised, Sabbath-centric southern rock that HULL conjure up. This
innovative quintet have built a bridge between unashamed retro bluster and
something entirely fresh and new, and their reputation as one of the
must-see live bands on the East Coast has flourished as a result. They're
currently working on their debut album, tentatively titled "Viking
Funeral". Forthcoming gigs in NYC with the likes of Municipal Waste and The
Sword look certain to establish HULL in 2007. -Metal Hammer
For fans of...MASTODON, HIGH ON FIRE, THE SWORD
Boy/Girl - plays a creeped out brand of rock with frenetic highs, unsettling lows, and strange sexual undertones. The male/female duo was formed on the dirty streets of* Jersey City*. The story begins in 2003 after Lisa moved to *NYC* from *Oslo, Norway* to study liquid-liquid extractions at Columbia University. Over time she became overwrought with contempt for the university and its ivory tower atmosphere. It was then that she decided to get out of Dodge and move with a friend to an abandoned building across the Hudson River in Jersey City. Eric had moved into the same building two months prior to Lisa's arrival. He explains his arrival at this place was primarily due to circumstances involving a lady and other events beyond his *control*. They met in February of 2005 and made a pact to start playing music together after Eric's return from an extended hunting trip for the American Museum of Natural History in *India*. That summer Lisa secured a rehearsal space in a storage warehouse owned and operated by a "funny little *Italian* gentleman". Eric returned that fall after spending a quarantined month in *Dubai *fighting Dengue Fever. That October the duo immediately started writing and recording their current Ep.
Ana Lola Roman - "Ana Lola Roman's Canon of surreal songs, contradictory stylings, and japanese music box hi-jinks won't let anyone get too comfortable in their seats on any night. She has recently shed her solo stage act, and is now juggling a 3-piece band. Her jungle-y glam-like worlds collide with down to earth bass and drum collages provided for her by Bassist Robert Madler and Drummer Tim Stevens. The collages enable Ana to express and evoke banshees of bygone cauldrons, a Thelonious Monk dancing with Joplin, latin flourishes gone acidic, and a nursery rhyme or three. Her voice teeters on from high Edith Piaf ecstacy to low Bowie-esque swagger, onwards towards a Nina Hagen schizophrenia. Her stage prowess is both withdrawn, unpredictable, and down right delicious." -Pete's Candy Store preview
Goes Cube - Matt, David (and former member The Beating Machine) unleashing a huge sound with a simple set-up. Now a human three-piece with Kenny Appell.
Stereogum Article
"The word 'punishing' is so out of fashion, or - better - it was... yes because Goes Cube is reinventing the term, giving it a new meaning. "Simply punishing" is how the B'klyn trio defines its music: as in a devastatingly intense wave of sound aiming at you, looking at you, something you can't ignore or avoid - like the good old Apocalypse. The band gave us a preview of 3 new tracks they just finished recording. One of them sounds - as expected - simply punishing - how else can you define this? Other tracks show a slightly softer side which makes things even more interesting, as spaces open up for some sonic experimentation and melodies. By the way, those guitars sound awesome. -Deli Magazine.
TimeOut NY calls them "experts of the bitter kiss-off."
Ohmyrockness.com says they give them "hope for the future of rock in New York City"
Prefix Mag says: "Brooklyn-based three-piece Goes Cube does indie-RAWK the way it should be. How should it be you ask? Mostly like this: The bass will be loud, you won't understand the vocals, the drums will kick your ass and the guitar will slay all in sight."

Other Passengers - Other Passengers first emerged on the underground NYC music scene in March 2004 and quickly grabbed attention with their moody and dramatic sound: at times loud and jarring and in an instant moving to the realm of eerie and ethereal space creating a collage of post-punk psychedelia that reflects the dichotomy of the city: isolation among millions. In October 2004, they released their debut EP, Is It Nothing to You, All Those Who Pass By? Other Passengers now have a UK deal, and it will be no time before US listeners wake up.
You will soon know how IMPORTANT this band really is.
The Art of Shooting -

The Art of Shooting play noisy rock that will appeal to fans of Sonic Youth and Blonde Redhead...and the NRA, maybe?" - L Magazine
"Wailing over one another to provide an eerie, cool quality as the music builds and drops dramatically in what can only be described as "Art Punk." -independentsonly.com.
Art of Shooting "Tyrant's Black Eyes" Brooklyn's The Art of Shooting has spawned a disc of raw energy and pure guts. At times, messy beats provide a danceable element accompanied by the shared vocals of front women Kelly Corson and Amy Barrett. Wailing over one another to provide an eerie, cool quality as the music builds and drops dramatically in what can only be described as "Art Punk". Their rock has a sort of an unhinged feel to it, like at any time the band might start pounding their instruments uncontrollably driving the speakers to explode! They say it about movies, why not music, "It's an amazing thrill ride..." Seriously! R.I.Y.L.: Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs-independentsonly.com<BR
The Gritty Midi Gang - "The Gritty Midi Gang is a promising young Brooklyn band who actually sort of sound exactly how their name would have you assume: ballsy, energetic rock music with well-done bits of electronic embellishment." -L magazine ***TimeOut NY says, "The Gritty MIDI Gang plays tender, intelligent indie-pop that has a British sort of melancholy"***And check out a feature Jezebel Music did on them!
Deli Magazine Review - "Chris Keyes formed The Gritty Midi Gang alongside Jeremy Rose within the SUNY Fredonia musical sanctuary and while under the auspices of Dave Fridman (tarbox Road Studios). The band's self-titled, souble disc EP features funky beats and synths mixed with explosive guitars that catapult the listener onto a wave of nostalgia. GMG recently located to Brooklyn [and Queens] where it has wowed NYC audiences with its brand of electro-textured pop that guarantees uncrossed arms and smiles galore. "Valentine's Day" recalls the Postal Service, but with more oomph as Steve Roessner presides over the drums. But simplicity be damned as GMG span across a range of genres: Jillian Cimini (guitar/keys/vocals) shimmers as she channels the Cardigans' Nina Perrson, and when her voice joins Keyes' the resulting harmony brings to mind Canadian pop/dance group LEN. "Labor Day" is led by a head-bobbing riff that gives way to a hip-shaking chorus, which will send shivers down your spine. Whether it's the Weezer-esque crescendos, the banging beats or sugary-sweet vocal harmonies that draw you in, GMG will knock you for a loop: mind, body and soul." -Jim Keller
The Shapes - These four guys and a girl play an infectious breed of garage pop that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Complete with fierce hooks, razor blade guitars, and contagious boy/girl banter , The Shapes are undoubtedly an up and coming force on the indie rock music scene. Having written and performed the theme song to A&E Television's "Dallas SWAT", playing live at the Family Business CMJ Music Marathon Showcase, NEMO in Boston, and NXNE in Toronto, plus being voted the grand prize winner in CMJ's Zig Zag Live Contest ...
Team Robespierre - TEAM ROBESPIERRE (19722061) was a Swedish pop music group. They remain the most successful Swedish music act and were one of the most popular groups in the world. Estimates of Team Robespierre's total worldwide sales vary from 140 to 500 million (there seems to be no reliable source for this information) which could make them the second most successful band of all time after The Beatles. Team Robespierre was formed around 1972 with Napalm Rex, Ty Die Ty and The Beast from the East Tomasz (nicknamed "Frida"). They became widely known after winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with "The Black Ratt". The group consisted of two couples, Napalm Rex and Ty Die Ty along with The Beast from the East Tomasz (nicknamed "Frida") and The Beast from the East Tomasz (nicknamed "Frida"). Team Robespierre currently resides in Brooklyn, New York and is alleged to have no children. Team Robespierre is an acronym formed from the first letters of each group member's name. It is usually written Team Robespierre but is sometimes written as a word, Team Robespierre. God save the Team!
Unlove - fomerly COMA, this 4 piece creates a sound much larger than their parts. Haunting vocals, along a wall of sound. EP 01 Produced by Unlove and Eli Janney.
The Fatales - Billboard Magazine (!) said "The latest release from the Virginia Tech alums, the seven-track EP "Pretty in Pixels," is filled with the kind of melodic peaks and valleys that recall such acts as Muse, Coldplay and Wolf Parade." -Katie Hasty. Shimmering layers of guitars and synths, lush melodic string arrangemtns, and meticulously programmed electronics, all driven by a propulsive and dynamic rhythm section. The picturesque effect is dark yet beautiful - dancing in circles while toeing th line of a familiar yet slightly skeyed pop structure.
Nakatomi Plaza - Overflowing with vistuostic guitar work, three part harmonies, synth textures and otherworldly samples, the album packs an astonishing depth and complexity, showcasing a phenomenal talent that still knows how to turn out a catchy chorus. No longer "available" through the Family Business, Nakatomi Plaza is being released through Red Leader Records. They will always be a part of the Familia.
