About Me

Ania (not 'Anja') Pieroni, born circa 1957 (some sources state 28th February although this hasn't been confirmed) is most famous for her enchanting appearance as Mater Lachrymarum in Dario Argento's Inferno. She is also appreciated in cult horror circles as 'Ann', the ill-fated babysitter in gore maestro Lucio Fulci's essential The House by the Cemetery as well as the beautiful, promiscuous shop-lifter in Dario Argento's slick giallo, Tenebre. She may have only starred in a handful of films - most of which are only available in Italian language - but she deserves a mention in cinema history as being one of the most beautiful actresses of the 1980s. If you are in doubt of this, check out Cosi Come Sei if you can find a copy of it; those scenes are too hot for MySpace to handle! I also find it ironic that she played a Mary Magdalene type character in the 1981 farcical comedy I Miracoloni; it seems out of step with her other roles which involve nudity and gore. I don't think her main aim was ever to be an actress; there are rumours that Lucio Fulci disliked her attitude whilst filming House by the Cemetery and she had an on-set bust-up with the director of Signore e Signori so maybe these are reasons why she had so few film roles. And if we were to be harsh, another reason is that she wasn't exactly the greatest actress ever; this may explain why she SMILES while her throat is slit in both House and Tenebre. Her last film was to be Fracchia contro Dracula in 1985; she was in charge of a regional TV station in Rome called Gbr by this point and didn't really need to act to pay the bills anymore. After being a mistress to shamed Italian PM Bettino Craxi throughout the 1980s, she lost popularity in Italy when he got busted for corruption and retired from the entertainment industry. It was unlikely she'd get any more roles due to her past association with Craxi, though I presume she was never charged with anything. However, she is alive and well and married businessman Gennaro Moccia in 2001 and has 5 children. It is alleged that she is currently living in Switzerland. It seems she's returned to the public eye in recent years and is involved with politics (this might not be a good idea considering past exploits though). To see more recent pics of Ania, check out the photo album. At the time (around 2000/01) this was reported in Italy under the headline Pieroni Returns From the Catacombs.Dario Argento did visit her to discuss a possible return to acting, reprising her role as Mater Lachrymarum in The Mother of Tears (La Terza madre, 'The Third Mother' in Italian) but he ultimately cast a younger actress in the role (the stunning Israeli model/actress Moran Atias).# I'm not Italian (mi dispiace, ma non parlo bene l'italiano) so I'm not aware of exactly what public opinion of her is in Italy in 2008; judging by the lack of information on the Internet it seems she's been reduced to a few 'remember this person?' threads on Italian forums. So that's why I created this page! Cheers and buona giornata!

Television:

After leaving the acting profession in the mid 80's, Ania hosted a few shows on a private, Rome-based TV station called Gbr ('Green Blue Red' according to most sites). She was the director general of the station since the early 80's, due to her friendship with Bettino Craxi. TV programmes covered women's issues/opera/topics at the time. Little is known about titles of shows or how long this career lasted but Dario Argento does mention on the Anchor Bay Tenebre audio-commentary that it is was very brief. One show was called Galassia Due ('Galaxy 2') and ran in late 1983.Gbr days [Rear to Front]: Daniela de Martino, Ania Pieroni & Marta Marzotto.
