Luke Hirst is a singer songwriter hailing from his hometown of Bradford. Influenced as much by The Beach Boys surf pop harmonies as The Smashing Pumpkins epic alt rock & Radiohead’s haunting atmospherics, Luke blends a unique list of influences into the sound he arrives at today.
For a 19-year old Luke has an impressive list of achievements. As a solo artist and as frontman of rock band DND he has played London’s City Showcase where Newton Faulkner supported him, 02 Wireless Festival, BT Digital Music Awards warm up shows & massive venues such as Bradford’s St George’s Hall, Leeds Uni & Manchester’s Great Northern Amphitheatre.
Alongside DND Luke has won XFM unsigned band of the month, the 2006 musicians centre battle of the bands and BBC Look North’s search for a band. Luke has received airplay from Kerrang radio, XFM, BBC raw talent, BCB, Ramair & Radio Aire aswell as TV coverage from the BBC. Luke also has a Diploma in Popular Music from the world-renowned Leeds College of Music.
After a few self produced lo-fi releases including a sold out EP ‘Fence Thief’ (‘Luke Hirst is clearly a one man songwriting machine’ BBC’) Indie label Heliotone issued Luke’s debut single in December 2004. The single was well received by critics, Piccadilly Records had the single as a record of the week and USA indie magazine Losing Today said: ‘I couldn’t honestly recommend a better way to spend a quarter of an hour of my life other than in the company of this EP. A star in the making don’t rule against it.’
Luke has played literally hundreds of live gigs since he started in 2004 and has shared stages with The Thrills, Air, The Bees, Newton Faulker & Luke Leighfield of Get Cape Wear Cape Fly to name a few. The live gigs have received some great press, ‘Luke adopts the simple but tried and tested combination of fine songs, good vocals and accomplished guitar playing’ BBC ‘Hirst’s vocals, at times, on par with Thom Yorke’s tortured, nervous lyrics.’ LeedsMusicScene.
The year kicks off with the release of Luke’s new EP in April. Produced by MTV mash up king TimG the record contains Luke’s strongest work to date. With a constant stream of gigs lined up in conjunction with the record, 2008 could well be Luke’s year.
