About Me

Having completed his studies at the Music in Holguin (his birthplace), Kiko continued his study of percussion at the National Arts School in Havana, Cuba and graduated with a Performance and Education degree in 1984. He began his professional career that same year as the percussionist in the Latin Jazz group directed by pianist and arranger Jose Maria Vitier. He travelled extensively with this group, performing at the Festival Latino de Nueva York, where he shared the stage with Dave Valentin, Mario Bauza, Ray Barreto, and Irakere. He also participated in the Festival de Cine in Merida, Venezuela and played at the Festival Cervantino in the Mexican city of Juanajuato on three occasions. In 1991 he performed in jazz festivals in France and Canada. From 1993 to 1998 Kiko lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil teaching Cuban Percussion at the Paulo Santos School. Upon his return to Cuba he worked with groups such as Conexion Salsera, Kiki Corona, as well as in the Cabaret Parisien at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba under the direction of Osmundo Calzado


Kiko currently resides in Montreal, Canada where he works with various local groups such as Trabuco Habanero, Sabrosura Viva, Cheers Entertainment , Groovetown, Electrica ,Roberto Lopez Project, Sandra and the Latin Groove and the Montreal Jazz Big Band. He performed as a special guest with the McGill Jazz Orchestra in Montreal as well as at the Rocky Mountain Festival at the Banff Center for the Arts in 2000. He also appears on the band's latest recording, "Conundrum". Kiko is an active member of the recently founded Latin Jazz group directed by Montreal-based Cuban pianist, composer, and arranger Yoel Diaz. Their first CD 'Te Llego' was released independently .Kiko is an active studio musician in Montreal.
