The Sun is on the Celestial Equator (and overhead at a point on the Equator at Earth). This point is also used to define the “prime meridian†– hence the Right Ascension of the Sun is, by definition, zero.Each day the Sun moves a little further along the Ecliptic • On April 21th, the Sun’s path along the Ecliptic carries it into Aries, till May 13th (23days) • Between May 14th and June 21st, the Sun passes through Taurus (39days) • June 22nd, Winter Solstice, the Sun is a R.A. 6hrs and Declination +23.5’- its maximum northern Declination. It also enters the constellation of Gemini until July 20th. Castor & Pollux, the twins (29days) • Between July 21st and August 10th, the Sun is in Cancer (21days) • On August 11th, the Sun enters Leo until September 16th. This constellation is relatively easy to recognize- particularly by the upside-down “question mark†pattern of stars(37days) • From September 17th to October 31st, the Sun follows the Ecliptic through Virgo. On September 23rd, Spring Equinox, the Sun crosses the Celestial Equator (at R.A. 12hr and Declination 0â€) (45days) • November 1st to 23rd has the Sun passing through Libra, the scales (23 days) • For a few days, November 24th to 29th, the Sun passes in front of Scorpius (6days) • On November 30th, the Sun enters the constellation of Ophiuchus until December 17th, the doctor of antiquity who saved Orion (18days) • On December 18th, the Sun moves into Sagittarius, the centaur-archer hunter until January 19th. On Dec. 22nd, Summer Solstice, the Sun reaches its most southern sky Declination at R.A. 18hr Declination= -23.5’ (33days) • From January 20th to February 15th, the Sun passes through Capricornus (27days) • Between February 16th and March 11th, the Sun is in Aquarius, the Water carrier (24days). • On March 12th, the Sun passes into Pisces (15days). • On March 27th, the Sun touches the very corner of the constellation of Cetus- the sea monster that threatened Andromeda (1day). • On March 28th, the Sun continues in Pisces until April 20th (24days).
