About Me

BIO
A New York City native, Ruth Gerson is a product of the High School of Performing Arts (brought to international attention by the Fame series and motion picture) and a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Princeton University. After school, she started in on NYCs Village club scene. The extraordinary media acclaim she received at her very first live performances lead to the release of her first independent CD.
With the release of the Wish EP Ruth and her band were invited to perform on Late Night with Conan OBrien. Getting that break - playing on Conan, things going so well selling CDs through the net and at shows, the touring I had developed throughout the country and abroad, all of it, pushed me pretty far into the self-produced, self-released music scene. Its a living and a realistic way to develop your art.
In 2003 Ruth landed a lead role in the film Promised Land, titled after her song, featured in the film. Produced by Tiziana Soudani of the Swiss-Italian Amka Films (the company responsible for Italys best grossing film of 1999, Pane E Tulipani), the film premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland to an audience of 4,000 in August of 2004 and landed international distribution with Columbus Film. Promised Land also stars Chad Smith (Tears of the Sun, True West), Lalaine (Lizzie McGuire), and features Patrick Bauchau (The Pretender) & Giuseppe Cederna of The Mediterranean. In addition to acting and singing in the picture, Ruth composes five songs for the soundtrack, some of which appear on her latest release Wake To Echo.
Recorded in an attic with producer / John Cale collaborator Lance Doss and mixed by engineer Toshikazu Yoshioka (The Strokes), Wake To Echo features Gersons most inspired and inspiring studio work to date. Distributed nationally by Burnside Distribution, the album has charted at many indie stores across the US and has been featured on two dozen AAA stations as well as XM Radios The Loft. Billboard.com writes, An expressive, insightful singer/songwriter whos been honing her skills over the course of a handful of albums, Ruth Gerson stands poised to expand her listening audience with her new full-length Wake To Echo ... A stylistic triumph of exuberant performance and solid songcraft, this should be the record to put Ruth Gerson on the musical map. Harp Magazine, CMJ, Performing Songwriter and others have given the album outstanding reviews as well.
I make a big part of my living these days playing in living rooms (Ruth has established a huge cult following through her living room concerts in the U.S.), and I love doing them. Still, playing with a band in front of thousands, as Ive done in Sweden or in Italy or at Newport, thats the most fun and the ultimate goal.
In Europe, Gerson has performed in Pitea Dansar Och Ler (Sweden) which aired on Swedish and Danish national television and radio. She has toured through Germany, Austria, Switzerland and most extensively through Italy, including many festivals and performances on the widely viewed television programs Roxy Bar and Help. Buscadero, Italys most respected music magazine, published Ruth at ..2 in an annual readers poll for Best Female Artist, which also listed Patti Smith (..1) and Sheryl Crow (..3) with Ruth still as an independent import. Through her performances at home and abroad, Gerson has a proven track record of delighting audiences internationally and the press agrees.
